Jordan Henderson Departs Ajax a Year Early Following Resurgence in Amsterdam

Former Liverpool and England midfielder Jordan Henderson is set to leave Ajax just six months after joining the Dutch club, a year before the expiration of his contract, the club confirmed on Thursday.

The 35-year-old made a high-profile move to Amsterdam in January 2024, following a brief and controversial stint at Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq. His switch to the Saudi Pro League had drawn widespread criticism due to his vocal support for LGBTQ+ rights, with many accusing him of compromising his principles for financial gain.

Despite the uproar, Henderson swiftly found his footing at Ajax. He was named club captain soon after his arrival and became a central figure in the team, amassing 57 appearances in a short span. His leadership helped spark a revival at the historic club, which had been coming off one of its most disappointing seasons.

Under his captaincy, Ajax mounted a strong challenge for the Eredivisie title. However, their campaign ended in disappointment as they squandered a nine-point advantage with just five games remaining, allowing arch-rivals PSV Eindhoven to snatch the championship.

Ajax technical director Alex Kroes praised Henderson’s impact, calling him “a true captain for us, both on and off the pitch.”

“His leadership and mentality played a key role in our return to the UEFA Champions League,” Kroes added.

Henderson’s performances didn’t go unnoticed back home either, earning him a surprise call-up to Thomas Tuchel’s England squad in March. Reflecting on his time in the Netherlands, the midfielder expressed gratitude.

“It was an honour to play for Ajax, and an even greater privilege to wear the armband,” Henderson said in a statement.

He declined to elaborate further, citing the recent tragedy involving his former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota and Jota’s brother, André Silva. Both men were killed in a car crash in Spain last week.
