Gyokeres “set to hit the ground running” at season start – Arteta
It may have been just a pre-season fixture against Villarreal, but there was no shortage of excitement at the Emirates Stadium as Arsenal fans flocked to see new signing Viktor Gyokeres make his first appearance, Sport360NG reports.
The Swedish striker, a £64 million acquisition from Sporting Lisbon, was the centre of attention as supporters hoped his arrival might be the final piece in Arsenal’s quest to end their four-year wait for silverware.
Gyokeres received the loudest ovation during the pre-match line-up announcements, rivalled only by the warm reception for 15-year-old prodigy Max Dowman. Every time the ball came near the 27-year-old forward, anticipation rippled through the stands, with teammates seemingly eager to help him mark his debut with a goal.
That dream start didn’t materialise, however, as the Gunners were edged out 3-2 by the La Liga outfit. Summer recruit Christian Norgaard and skipper Martin Ødegaard found the net for Arsenal, but it wasn’t enough to overturn Villarreal’s lead.
Despite the defeat, there were encouraging signs, particularly from Gyokeres, who played an hour as he works towards full match fitness ahead of the Premier League opener against Manchester United on 17 August.
Having been without team training for two months since leaving Sporting, the striker is still catching up physically. He’ll have another opportunity to build rhythm in Saturday’s friendly against Athletic Bilbao, and manager Mikel Arteta is confident he’ll be ready for the trip to Old Trafford.
“Mentally and in terms of understanding his role, he’s 100 percent ready, if not more,” Arteta said. “He’s so determined and self-assured. I have no doubt he’ll be in a great place by the time the season starts.”
The Arsenal boss noted that starting Gyokeres was an important step in building chemistry with his new teammates and gaining confidence on home turf. “He’s only been here about a week, but I’ve already seen a lot of intent, especially in the way he attacks certain areas,” Arteta added.
Tactical Adjustments and Promising Moments
Arsenal appear to be adjusting their attacking patterns to better suit Gyokeres’ direct playing style, with more urgency in delivering crosses into the box. In the first half, he nearly connected with a dangerous ball, later stretching for a difficult delivery and forcing a strong save in the second period.
Asked how long it might take for Gyokeres to fully integrate, Arteta was upbeat: “Hopefully just a few days. Every training session, he’s feeling more comfortable.”
“He’s also building relationships off the pitch, which is crucial, especially with the players who will be helping him get into goal-scoring positions,” the Spaniard continued. “Considering he only had five training sessions before today, I expect him to be in much better shape by Saturday.”
