Liverpool to Honour Late Diogo Jota with Emotional Tribute at Anfield Opener

Diogo Jota’s family will be at Anfield on Friday as Liverpool honour their late forward before the club’s Premier League opener against Bournemouth, Sport360NG reports.

The reigning champions are set to pay tribute to the former Portugal international, who tragically died in a car accident in northern Spain last month, aged 28, alongside his younger brother, Andre Silva, 25.

A minute’s silence will be observed across all Premier League fixtures this weekend, with players wearing black armbands. Stadium big screens will display messages and images celebrating both men’s lives.

Liverpool have confirmed that Anfield will host an additional fan-led tribute, including a mosaic across the Kop and Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand during the pre-match silence.

In his matchday programme notes, Reds boss Arne Slot acknowledged the emotional weight of the occasion:

“We know this will be an incredibly emotional night, being our first league game since losing Diogo and Andre. The tributes across the football world, especially within LFC, have been truly moving. Tonight, we come together once again to honour them.

I believe Diogo’s wife, children and family will be here, and it’s important we show they will always have our love and support through this tragic time.”

Liverpool players will wear shirts and jackets featuring a “Forever 20” emblem, a nod to Jota’s shirt number, for the entire season. The number 20 shirt has been retired, following discussions with Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso, and his family.

Jota was part of the side that clinched Liverpool’s record-equalling 20th English league title last season. Wolves, his former club, will also mark his passing with their own tribute before Saturday’s home fixture against Manchester City.
