Emotional Night for Portugal: Ronaldo Leads 5-0 Win in Tribute to Jota
Cristiano Ronaldo struck twice as Portugal cruised to a 5-0 victory over Armenia in their first outing since the tragic passing of Diogo Jota, Sport360NG reports.
Before kick-off at the Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium, players and fans observed a minute’s silence in memory of Jota and his brother, André Silva, who lost their lives in a car accident in July.
Portugal started strongly, with João Félix finding the net inside 10 minutes. Ronaldo, wearing the captain’s armband at 40, doubled the lead on 21 minutes, a poignant moment as it matched Jota’s shirt number for the national team.
“It felt like a sign,” said defender Nuno Tavares afterwards. “That goal showed Jota was with us tonight, and he always will be.”
João Cancelo added a third before Ronaldo delivered a trademark thunderbolt from distance, extending his extraordinary international tally to 140 goals. Félix then grabbed his second shortly after the hour mark to complete a commanding performance.
