Romero Commits Future to Spurs with New Four-Year Deal

Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero has signed a new contract that ties him to the north London club until 2029, Sport360NG reports.

The Argentina international, 27, first joined Spurs from Atalanta in 2021 on loan before completing a permanent switch the following year. Since then, he has made 126 appearances, netting eight goals, and last season captained Tottenham to Europa League glory with victory over Manchester United, ending the club’s 17-year wait for silverware.

Romero had been linked with a summer move to Atletico Madrid, but new head coach Thomas Frank handed him the captaincy and made securing his long-term future a priority.

“I’m very happy here,” Romero said after signing. “We want to keep winning. Why not another trophy this season? For me, this club is the best in the world. Becoming captain and now signing a new deal in the space of two weeks, it’s a fantastic feeling.”

Frank praised the defender’s influence both on and off the pitch. “He’s a leader who commands respect,” the Spurs boss explained. “The staff tell me they’ve never seen him train this well. He’s setting the standards for everyone.”

Romero, who had two years left on his previous deal, becomes the second player in recent weeks to commit his future to Tottenham, following right-back Djed Spence.

Spence, 25, joined from Middlesbrough in 2022 and, after loan spells at Rennes, Leeds, and Genoa, established himself last season under Ange Postecoglou. He has made 42 appearances and scored twice, and has now extended his stay until 2028.
