Calafiori Header Punishes Amorim’s Goalkeeping Gamble as Arsenal Beat United

Ruben Amorim’s first big call of the season backfired as Riccardo Calafiori’s early strike earned Arsenal a 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford, Sport360NG reports.

United’s £200m summer overhaul did not include a new goalkeeper, and with Andre Onana sidelined by a hamstring injury, Amorim handed a debut to Turkey international Altay Bayindir ahead of veteran Tom Heaton. The move proved costly.

In the 13th minute, Declan Rice swung a corner dangerously under the crossbar. Bayindir hesitated on his line, got a weak touch on the delivery, and could only divert the ball into Calafiori’s path. The Italian defender bundled home from close range to claim the game’s only goal.

Despite the setback, United produced a performance far improved on last season. They controlled possession, created far more chances than the visitors, and registered 20 shots, their most in a league game against Arsenal since 2011. Yet, unlike that famous 8-2 rout, they could not find the net.

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya was the difference, producing a string of vital saves. He denied debutant Matheus Cunha three times, then clawed away a Bryan Mbeumo effort in the second half to preserve the lead. Rice almost doubled the advantage with a late free-kick, but Arsenal held firm for their fifth win in six league meetings with United.

United Analysis: Encouragement but No Reward

The Old Trafford crowd responded with applause at full-time despite the defeat, recognising the effort Amorim’s reshaped side displayed. Cunha’s energy made him an instant favourite, Mbeumo impressed with his movement, and Casemiro dictated play with his passing range. Patrick Dorgu shone at wing-back, while Matthijs de Ligt was commanding in defence.

But United were undone by one decisive moment. Bayindir’s indecision under Rice’s corner evoked memories of United’s great goalkeepers, Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar, who would not have been beaten so easily. Instead, Amorim was left to reflect on another costly error in a fixture where margins are always fine.

The defeat compounds pressure on the Portuguese coach. Amorim has now lost 15 of his first 28 league matches in charge, the fastest any United manager has reached that tally since Paul Hart at Portsmouth in 2009.

Arsenal Analysis: Winning Start, Work to Do

For Arsenal, the match was notable for Viktor Gyokeres’ first Premier League appearance following his £64m switch from Sporting Lisbon. The Sweden striker, still short of fitness after a disrupted summer, showed glimpses of his power but struggled to make an impact before being replaced by Kai Havertz after an hour, a substitution met with jeers from the home crowd.

Calafiori, though, offered a reminder of Arsenal’s attacking evolution. His forward runs added unpredictability but also left spaces for United to exploit, exposing a back line that looked less secure than usual.

Mikel Arteta will be relieved to start the season with three points but knows his team remain a work in progress. With Gyokeres needing sharpness and the defence yet to settle, the Gunners still have strides to make if they are to turn early promise into silverware.
