World Championships: Enekwechi Falls Short of Medal, Secures Fifth Spot
Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi placed fifth in the men’s shot put final at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, registering a best throw of 21.52m, Sport360NG reports.
The national record-holder, competing in his fifth World Championships, narrowly missed out on a podium finish despite advancing strongly from qualification with 20.83m. It was his third straight appearance in a global final.
In Sunday’s showdown, the 31-year-old opened with 20.90m, fouled his second effort, and then managed 20.59m before hitting his peak mark of 21.52m.
The gold medal went to American Ryan Crouser, who produced a season’s best 22.34m. Mexico’s Uziel Muñoz earned silver with a national record of 21.97m, while Italy’s Leonardo Fabbri clinched bronze on countback after equaling New Zealand’s Tom Walsh at 21.94m. Walsh had to settle for fourth, just ahead of Enekwechi.
For the Nigerian, the fifth-place finish underscored his steady presence at the elite level. After missing out on the Budapest final two years ago, he showed resilience in Tokyo, making the top 12 from Group A with a series of consistent throws (20.83m, 20.71m, 20.83m).
Enekwechi’s run further cements his reputation as one of Africa’s leading throwers, maintaining a streak of three consecutive appearances in World Championship finals.
