Oyeleke, Adebayo-Lateef fire Nigeria to glory in Abidjan run archery event
Nigeria made an emphatic impression at the maiden Run Archery Tournament in Africa, asserting its rising influence in the fast-growing sport during the competition in Ivory Coast, Sport360NG reports.
The landmark two-day event, held November 15–16 at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, brought together athletes from across West Africa for a high-intensity contest blending speed, stamina and precision.
Representatives of Zen Archery Club, Lagos, dominated proceedings, clinching gold medals across both the individual and team categories.
In the Individual Sprint, Emmanuel Oyeleke produced a sensational display, pairing blistering pace with clinical accuracy to claim the top prize for Nigeria. His teammate, Tola Adebayo-Lateef, followed closely to secure silver after another impressive outing. Ivory Coast’s Obo Cedric finished third to earn bronze for the hosts.
Nigeria’s momentum carried into the Team Relay Sprint, where Oyeleke and Adebayo-Lateef combined seamlessly to outclass their challengers and secure a second gold. Their sharp coordination, discipline and competitive edge set them apart as they powered through the relay course.
The event marked a significant moment for the continent, being the first officially sanctioned Run Archery competition held in Africa. Nigeria’s dominant showing now places the country at the forefront of the sport’s emergence and future development in the region.
Reflecting on the team’s performance, Oyeleke expressed pride in the historic achievement.
“This is a landmark moment not only for us, but for Nigeria and African archery,” he said. “We’re proud to represent the country and grateful to the organisers, the Ivorian Archery Federation, World Archery, and everyone who facilitated the seminar and competition. We’ve gained invaluable experience.”
Run Archery, which merges long-distance running with precision archery, continues to grow internationally, and Nigeria’s clean sweep in Abidjan underscores its potential to become a leading force in Africa.
