Romero’s last-gasp overhead kick rescues Spurs and eases pressure on Frank
Cristian Romero delivered a captain’s performance of the highest order as his spectacular 95th-minute overhead kick earned Tottenham Hotspur a dramatic 2–2 draw at Newcastle United, easing the strain on manager Thomas Frank, Sport360NG reports.
Spurs were staring at a sixth defeat in eight matches when substitute Anthony Gordon’s late penalty looked to have secured Newcastle a third consecutive Premier League victory. But Romero, who had already cancelled out Bruno Guimarães’ opener, struck again deep into stoppage time, punishing the hosts’ failure to clear a corner and sending the travelling supporters into delirium high in the St James’ Park stands.
Tottenham were furious with the penalty decision that briefly put Newcastle ahead. Referee Tom Bramall initially waved play on, but after a VAR review he ruled Rodrigo Bentancur had pulled Dan Burn to the ground. Gordon converted the retake, leaving Spurs facing another damaging defeat.
Instead, they rallied. Romero’s brace, remarkably Tottenham’s only two shots on target, ensured Frank’s side remain above Newcastle and hold 11th place.
Spurs Analysis: Captain Delivers When It Matters
Tottenham’s form had been troubling, even with Romero available, but his return from suspension proved decisive. After conceding twice inside six minutes against Fulham last weekend, Spurs badly needed authority and aggression at the back.
Romero was one of four changes made by Frank, with Pape Matar Sarr, Bentancur and Brennan Johnson also restored to the starting XI. Few could have predicted the Argentine would provide the attacking spark as well: he scored once in the entire previous campaign, yet struck both goals here with clinical precision.
His leadership and refusal to give in invigorated a Spurs side whose supporters roared them off the pitch with chants of renewed belief. The challenge now is to take that resilience into Saturday’s home match against Frank’s former club, Brentford.
Newcastle Analysis: Late-Goal Woes Strike Again
For Newcastle, this was an all-too-familiar story. Eddie Howe’s side have now conceded stoppage-time goals at home against Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs, costly lapses against the league’s elite.
A third straight league win, something they have not achieved since April, appeared within reach after Gordon restored the lead following Romero’s first equaliser. Newcastle had shown character to respond quickly, but their late-game management once again unravelled.
The failure to clear the decisive corner, combined with the space Romero was afforded to set up his acrobatic finish, will frustrate Howe. The ball bounced beyond three defenders before dropping into the net, a moment that epitomised the softness of the concession.
What could have been a springboard for Newcastle’s season instead became another lesson in seeing out tight matches.
