Manchester United climb to sixth after thrashing Wolves amid fan protests at Molineux
Manchester United survived an early scare at Molineux to claim a much-needed win over bottom-placed Wolves, climbing to sixth in the Premier League on a night marked by protests from the home supporters, Sport360NG reports.
A significant number of Wolves fans delayed their entry by 15 minutes in protest against the club’s Chinese ownership, and the tension in the stands was matched by drama on the pitch. Wolves ended a 540-minute goal drought when Jean-Ricner Bellegarde capitalised on a fortunate rebound from David Moller Wolfe’s mishit effort to level the score, punishing United for a string of missed chances.
United had earlier squandered several openings, including a miscued attempt from Bruno Fernandes after a sloppy error from goalkeeper Andre, who was caught dwelling on the ball deep in his own half.
However, the visitors regained control early in the second half. A strong tackle from Luke Shaw ignited a swift counterattack, culminating in Diogo Dalot setting up Bryan Mbeumo for a simple finish. Mason Mount extended the advantage with a composed strike after expertly bringing down Fernandes’ lofted pass, marking United’s first two-goal lead away from home in the league since March.
Fernandes later wrapped up the victory from the penalty spot after VAR spotted a handball by Yerson Mosquera, sealing United’s biggest win of the season.
The improved second-half display offered relief to head coach Ruben Amorim, who avoided another difficult night in front of minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and visiting supporter, darts world champion Luke Littler. Meanwhile, frustrations among Wolves fans spilled over as their side slumped to an eighth consecutive defeat, equalling a long-standing club record. Chants against chairman Jeff Shi rang around the stadium, and the decision to substitute Jorgen Strand Larsen was met with ironic cheers.
Manchester United: Amorim Gets Breathing Space
Before the second half resumed, Amorim emerged alone from the tunnel, while an image circulated online of Ratcliffe animatedly addressing director of football Jason Wilcox, with chief executive Omar Berrada caught between them, an image that might have carried far more dramatic interpretations had United not turned the game around.
United finished with 27 attempts on goal, 10 on target, and could easily have scored more. Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone denied Dalot and twice thwarted Mbeumo, while Toti made a crucial goal-line clearance from Matheus Cunha’s follow-up effort. At times, United’s finishing seemed determined to waste opportunities, including a moment when Cunha squared for Fernandes instead of shooting, only for Fernandes to slip.
Despite a nervy first half and Wolves’ surprise equaliser, United ultimately controlled the match. Yet, even with just one defeat in nine matches, lingering questions remain about consistency and ruthlessness.
Wolves: Protest, Frustration, and a Record-Equalling Slide
The Wolves supporters’ delayed entrance reflected deepening dissatisfaction with owners Fosun, with the sight of a half-empty South Bank and a prominent “Shi Out” banner underscoring the tension. Though the owners are seeking minority investment rather than planning a sale, the deteriorating relationship with fans appears increasingly urgent to address.
Wolves’ decline in recent seasons, from Europa League quarter-finalists five years ago to a side 13 points from safety, has left supporters feeling let down, with key players sold and inadequately replaced. The lack of top-flight victories since April has only intensified the gloom.
Against United, Wolves showed effort but again lacked the quality required to compete. The 3–1 defeat marks their eighth successive loss, matching a run last seen in the 1981–82 season. With a daunting trip to league leaders Arsenal up next, few expect that sequence to end soon.
