Amorim sacked, after Leeds draw, Fletcher takes charge at United
Manchester United have parted ways with head coach Ruben Amorim following a turbulent 14-month spell at Old Trafford, with former midfielder Darren Fletcher set to take interim charge for Wednesday’s Premier League fixture against Burnley, Sport360NG reports.
The decision was confirmed less than 24 hours after United were held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds United, a result that intensified scrutiny on Amorim’s position amid growing tension between the Portuguese coach and the club’s hierarchy.
In a statement, United said the move was made “reluctantly” but deemed necessary with the club sitting sixth in the Premier League.
“With Manchester United currently sixth in the table, the club’s leadership believes this change gives the team the best chance of achieving the highest possible league finish,” the statement read. “The club thanks Ruben for his contribution and wishes him well for the future.”
Amorim’s entire coaching staff have also departed.
Relationship Breakdown Behind the Scenes
Amorim had publicly hinted at strained relations with senior figures in recent days, suggesting he lacked full backing in the transfer market. Following the Leeds draw, he added to the uncertainty by stating he wanted to operate as a “manager, not just a coach,” and indicated he would be prepared to leave when his contract expired in 18 months.
Sources close to the club say United’s leadership felt there was insufficient tactical evolution or overall progress this season, despite repeated assurances from Amorim that his preferred 3-4-3 system would be adapted to suit the Premier League.
Internal frustration reportedly peaked after United reverted to a back three against Wolves in late December, shortly after experimenting with a back four. The decision was seen as a step backwards, particularly given the club’s recruitment strategy and significant investment in attacking players.
Shortest Reign Since Moyes
Amorim, 40, was appointed in November 2024 after United paid Sporting Lisbon around €11m (£9.25m) to activate his release clause. He won 25 of his 63 matches in charge across all competitions, making his tenure the shortest permanent managerial spell at United since David Moyes’ eight-month reign in 2014.
Despite reaching the Europa League final last season, where United lost 1-0 to Tottenham, domestic form remained inconsistent. United finished 15th in the Premier League last campaign, their lowest top-flight finish since 1974, and failed to qualify for Europe for the first time in a decade.
This season, Amorim oversaw heavy summer spending of more than £200m, but results failed to match expectations. His Premier League win ratio of just under 32% is the lowest of any permanent United manager in the competition’s history, while defensive records also ranked among the poorest.
Fletcher to Lead on Interim Basis
Fletcher, 41, will now step into the dugout on a temporary basis. The former Scotland international is currently United’s under-18s head coach and previously served as technical director from 2021 to 2024. While he has no senior managerial experience, Fletcher is a familiar figure at the club, having made over 300 appearances during a trophy-laden playing career that included five Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League.

He is expected to address the media on Tuesday ahead of United’s trip to Turf Moor.
United’s FA Cup campaign begins on Sunday against Brighton, as the club enters another period of transition while assessing long-term options for the managerial role.
