Bills sack McDermott after play-off exit as Buffalo opts for fresh direction

The Buffalo Bills have parted company with head coach Sean McDermott following Saturday’s NFL play-off defeat by the Denver Broncos, Sport360NG reports.

McDermott, 51, guided Buffalo to the post-season in eight of his nine campaigns in charge and delivered five AFC East titles, but the franchise fell short of reaching a Super Bowl during his tenure despite the presence of star quarterback Josh Allen.

The decision came after a dramatic 33-30 overtime loss in the Divisional Round, where Allen’s fourth turnover of the night set up the Broncos’ winning field goal.

“Sean helped change the mindset of this organisation and played a major role in establishing the Bills as a consistent play-off team,” owner Terry Pegula said in a statement. “However, we believe a new structure is needed to give us the best opportunity to move forward and reach the next level.”

McDermott is the eighth NFL head coach to exit his role this month and the 10th to depart since the season began. His departure ends a period in which Buffalo became the first team in league history to win a play-off game in six consecutive seasons without advancing to the Super Bowl.

Attention now turns to the championship games, with the Los Angeles Rams visiting Seattle in the NFC Championship next Sunday, while New England travel to Denver in the AFC decider. The winners will meet in Super Bowl 60 on 8 February at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

Analysis

McDermott’s early impact in Buffalo was undeniable. He ended an 18-year play-off drought in his first season and turned the Bills into regular contenders, though repeated eliminations at the hands of Kansas City ultimately defined his era.

This season appeared to present a clear path, with several AFC heavyweights missing the play-offs. However, Buffalo’s roster was widely viewed as its weakest since Allen entered the league in 2018, placing heavy reliance on the reigning MVP’s individual brilliance.

After surrendering the AFC East crown and settling for a wildcard berth, the Bills won on the road at Jacksonville before falling short in Denver. McDermott and Allen now share the unenviable distinction of the most combined play-off wins by a coach-quarterback pairing without reaching the Super Bowl.

With Allen still just 29, a new stadium on the horizon and several high-profile coaches available, Buffalo’s leadership has opted to act decisively — believing a change now offers the best chance to finally deliver the franchise’s first Super Bowl title.
