Merino facing extended lay-off after Arsenal confirm foot surgery
Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino is set to miss a significant period after the club confirmed the Spain international requires surgery on a serious foot injury, Sport360NG reports.
The 29-year-old was hurt during last week’s defeat by Manchester United and was absent from Saturday’s victory over Leeds. Head coach Mikel Arteta had indicated the midfielder would undergo specialist assessment to determine the severity of the problem.
Arsenal have now revealed Merino has suffered a bone injury to his right foot and will go under the knife in the coming days.
“Mikel will have surgery in the coming days and will then begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme,” the club said in a statement. “Mikel is expected to be out of action for an extended period, with the aim of returning to full training before the end of the season.”
Merino joined Arsenal from Real Sociedad in August 2024 and has played a key role in Arteta’s squad this campaign, scoring six goals in all competitions.
