Morocco seeks postponement of 2026 women’s AFCON amid scheduling constraints

The 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) could be delayed after the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) formally asked the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to push back the tournament, Sport360NG reports.

In a letter addressed to CAF, the Moroccan federation cited severe congestion in the country’s domestic football calendar as the reason it is unable to stage the competition as scheduled next month.

Morocco’s top-tier Botola Pro League has already been disrupted by a series of postponements linked to major international events, including the African Nations Championship (CHAN), the Arab Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The overlap of these competitions has reportedly placed significant strain on organisational and logistical planning.

As a result, the FRMF has requested that CAF reschedule the women’s continental tournament to a later date to ease operational challenges.

CAF has not yet issued an official statement on the request, although consultations are understood to be ongoing as the governing body considers a revised timetable.

The stakes for the 2026 WAFCON are particularly high, with the four semi-finalists set to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, underlining the tournament’s importance in Africa’s route to the global stage.
