Former Nigeria international Juwon Oshaniwa has expressed confidence in Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez, tipping him to play a significant role for the Super Eagles following an encouraging start to his international career, Sport360NG reports.

Fernandez marked his arrival on the national stage with a goal in Nigeria’s 2-2 draw against Jordan in Antalya, coming shortly after making his debut in the team’s 2-1 victory over Iran during the March international window.

Reflecting on the defender’s early impact, Oshaniwa described him as a valuable addition to the squad, highlighting his composure and defensive qualities.

The former Hearts full-back, who was part of Nigeria’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations-winning team and featured at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, noted that Fernandez’s experience in Scottish football has equipped him well for the rigours of international competition.

Fernandez, 24, has quickly established himself as a dependable option in defence, earning praise for his physical presence and calmness in his first appearances for the national team.

Oshaniwa also emphasised the benefits of the defender’s exposure to a physically demanding and tactically disciplined league, suggesting it gives him a competitive edge within the Super Eagles setup.

Since joining Rangers from Peterborough United last summer, Fernandez has grown into a regular starter, making 19 league appearances. His performances have been underlined by strong defensive statistics, including a 66 per cent success rate in ground duels and 72 per cent in aerial contests.

Despite the positive signs, Oshaniwa cautioned that the national team remains a work in progress, stressing the importance of gradually integrating new players like Fernandez to strengthen squad depth and competition.
