Arsenal still title favourites, says Lineker after cup disappointments

Former England striker Gary Lineker has voiced strong belief that Arsenal will clinch the Premier League title this season, even after a disappointing run in domestic cup competitions, Sport360NG reports. 

The Gunners’ hopes of a historic quadruple were dented following a 2-0 loss to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final. Their struggles continued over the weekend, as they exited the FA Cup at the quarter-final stage after a 2-1 defeat to Southampton, sparking concerns over a potential dip in form.

Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast, Lineker acknowledged the recent setbacks but dismissed suggestions of a full-blown crisis.

“It’s been a tough couple of weeks for Arsenal. People are questioning whether it’s panic stations or a crisis, but it’s more of a slight wobble. The next few matches are crucial, they need to regain composure and stabilise,” he said.

Despite their cup disappointments, Arsenal remain firmly in control of the Premier League title race, holding a nine-point advantage over Manchester City. They are also preparing for a high-stakes UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash against Sporting CP.

Lineker maintained that Mikel Arteta’s side are well-positioned to secure the league crown.

“They’ve built a significant lead, although this is the stage where pressure intensifies. Still, I believe they’ll get over the line and win the league, which remains their primary objective. Success in the Champions League would be a huge bonus, especially as it’s a trophy they’ve never won,” he added.

While recent results have raised doubts, Arsenal’s strong league position keeps them on course for a landmark domestic triumph if they can maintain consistency in the closing stages of the campaign.
