End of an Era: Trippier set to leave Newcastle United this summer
Kieran Trippier will leave Newcastle United at the end of the season when his contract expires, bringing an end to a highly influential chapter in the club’s recent history, Sport360NG reports.
The experienced right-back joined Newcastle from Atlético Madrid in January 2022, becoming the club’s first signing following its Saudi-backed takeover. At the time, Newcastle were battling relegation, but Trippier quickly emerged as a central figure in the team’s revival under head coach Eddie Howe.
During his time at St James’ Park, the 35-year-old played a pivotal role in the club’s resurgence, helping secure qualification for the UEFA Champions League in 2023 and 2025. He also captained the side to EFL Cup success, ending Newcastle’s 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy.
In a joint statement, Trippier confirmed his decision to move on, describing his time on Tyneside as deeply meaningful.
“It’s emotional and I’m really going to miss it,” he said. “I want to thank the supporters for standing by me through both the good and difficult moments. The journey with my team-mates has been incredible, and winning a trophy together is something I will always cherish.”
The former England international also paid tribute to Howe, who brought him to the club after previously working with him at Burnley, highlighting the manager’s belief in him during a crucial stage of his career.
Howe, in turn, praised Trippier’s immense contribution both on and off the pitch, describing him as a driving force behind the club’s transformation.
“Kieran has been outstanding for us,” Howe said. “From day one, he raised standards across the squad. His technical quality, leadership and experience have been vital in shaping the team’s progress. In challenging moments, his influence has been invaluable.”
Signed for a modest fee of £12m, Trippier’s impact has far exceeded expectations. He arrived during one of the most difficult periods in Newcastle’s modern history, with the club struggling near the bottom of the Premier League table and low on confidence.
However, his presence helped stabilise the squad and played a key role in attracting other high-profile signings, including Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimarães, who has since become a cornerstone of the team.
As Newcastle begin planning for the future with a younger squad profile, Trippier’s departure signals the end of a significant era. His influence, leadership and consistency have left a lasting mark on the club.
He is expected to receive a fitting farewell from supporters, with many regarding him as one of the finest right-backs to have represented Newcastle United.
