England Women Retain European Crown After Dramatic Penalty Shootout Win Over Spain
England’s Lionesses etched their names into the history books once again after retaining their UEFA Women’s EURO title with a thrilling 3-1 penalty shootout victory over Spain at St. Jakob-Park in Basel.
The closely contested final ended 1-1 after extra time, but England held their nerve from the spot to seal back-to-back European championships, a first for the women’s national team.
Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton delivered a standout performance, playing a pivotal role in England’s triumph. Her two crucial saves in the shootout ensured the Lionesses edged out a determined Spanish side.
Spain took the early initiative in the first half, going ahead in the 25th minute when Mariona Caldentey headed home a precise cross from Ona Batlle, leaving Hampton with no chance.
However, England responded with resilience in the second half. Alessia Russo levelled the score in the 57th minute, latching onto a smart pass from Chloe Kelly to make it 1-1.
Both teams created chances in a tense second half and extra time, including a powerful header from Lucy Bronze that rattled the crossbar, but neither could find the breakthrough before penalties.
In the decisive shootout, Hampton denied efforts from Olga Carmona and Irene Paredes, while Russo and Kelly coolly converted their kicks. Spain, in contrast, managed just one successful spot-kick from four attempts.
Barcelona star Aitana Bonmatí was later recognised as the Player of the Tournament for her consistent brilliance throughout the competition.
With the win, England became the first senior national team from the country to clinch a major international trophy on foreign soil since the men’s World Cup triumph in 1966.
