Newcastle Begin Talks to Sign Ramsdale from Southampton

Newcastle United have initiated discussions with Southampton over a potential move for England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

The Magpies are exploring both loan and permanent transfer options, though Southampton are reportedly favouring a full sale, having paid Arsenal an initial £18 million for Ramsdale’s services last summer.

This development comes after Newcastle had agreed a £27 million deal with Burnley for James Trafford, only for Manchester City to exercise a matching clause and move to re-sign their former player.

Manager Eddie Howe is looking to bolster competition for first-choice shot-stopper Nick Pope, and Ramsdale would reunite with Howe, under whom he played during his time at Bournemouth. The 27-year-old, who last featured for the England national team in March, would also remain in the Premier League if the deal materialises, despite Southampton’s relegation last season, during which he made 30 league appearances.

Newcastle are preparing for a Champions League campaign and seeking reinforcements across the squad. The club is also monitoring potential changes in attack, with speculation around striker Alexander Isak’s future and interest from Liverpool. RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko has been identified as a possible successor if Isak departs.

Ramsdale vs Newcastle’s Current Options

Nick Pope’s appearance for England in 2022 marked a historic moment as he became the first Newcastle goalkeeper in over a century to earn a senior national cap. Now, the club could be set to welcome another England international to their ranks.

However, Ramsdale’s track record in the top flight might raise eyebrows. He has suffered relegation from the Premier League with three different clubs, most recently Southampton, who endured a dismal 2024–25 campaign with just 12 points. Earlier in his career, he also went down with Sheffield United and Bournemouth, and even experienced a drop to League Two while on loan at Chesterfield.

Despite those setbacks, Ramsdale’s experience is notable. He has made 183 Premier League appearances, just shy of Pope’s 221, and remains a capable presence between the posts. Statistically, last season saw him concede 66 goals with only three clean sheets, though he was often left exposed by a weak defence.

Compared to Pope, Ramsdale and current back-up Martin Dubravka are less proficient shot stoppers but offer greater distribution accuracy. Dubravka impressed when called upon last season but turns 37 in January, making a move for the younger Ramsdale a potentially forward-thinking investment.
