Frank Embraces ‘More Than a Friendly’ Challenge as Spurs Gear Up for Arsenal Clash in Hong Kong

Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank has described the upcoming North London derby against Arsenal in Hong Kong as his first significant test since taking the helm, and insisted it will be anything but a standard pre-season match, Sport360NG reports.

Spurs are set to face their fierce rivals on Thursday in what will be the first-ever edition of the storied rivalry held outside the United Kingdom. The high-profile encounter will take place at the sold-out 50,000-capacity Kai Tak Stadium.

“This is a major challenge,” Frank said during a press conference on Tuesday. “Not just because it’s Arsenal, our biggest rivals, but also because they’re currently, I must admit with some reluctance, one of the top teams in the world.”

Despite the match being billed as part of pre-season preparations, the Danish manager was quick to downplay any suggestion that the occasion would be treated as a routine exhibition. “It’s not just a friendly when you face Arsenal. We’re going out there to win,” he declared.

Frank assumed managerial duties last month following the surprise dismissal of Ange Postecoglou, who led Tottenham to Europa League success and ended the club’s 17-year wait for silverware.

As part of a summer rebuild, Spurs have brought in Ghanaian playmaker Mohammed Kudus from West Ham in a deal worth $74 million. However, efforts to lure Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest have so far been unsuccessful.

While Frank remained tight-lipped on transfer dealings, he confirmed discussions are ongoing. “We’re constantly talking about how to improve the squad, but I prefer to keep those talks internal,” he said. “I’m generally pleased with the team, though there are areas we’re still evaluating.”

Among last season’s challenges was an extensive injury crisis that contributed to Tottenham’s dismal 17th-place Premier League finish. One key absentee was defender Micky van de Ven, who struggled with fitness throughout the campaign.

Now fully fit and enjoying his first uninterrupted pre-season with the club, the Dutch centre-back is optimistic about his readiness. “Last year, I came in late and then had the Euros, so I never really had a full pre-season,” Van de Ven told AFP. “This summer has given me the chance to properly prepare my body for the season ahead, both in the Premier League and Champions League.”

Frank acknowledged that avoiding injury setbacks will be crucial to Tottenham’s ambitions. “Fitness and availability are critical at any club, especially when you’re dealing with an increasingly demanding schedule,” he said. “Thankfully, we’ve had a solid, extended pre-season. That allows us to carefully balance intensity and recovery.”

He added that the club has made “a few tweaks” to its training approach to better align with his vision. “We’re clear on the style of play we want to implement. The structure is in place, now it’s about executing it consistently.”
