Villarreal–Barcelona La Liga Clash Could Be First European League Match Staged Overseas

Villarreal’s upcoming La Liga meeting with Barcelona in December could make history as the first top-flight European league match to be played outside the continent, after the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) endorsed a proposal to host the fixture in the United States, Sport360NG reports.

The federation confirmed it will now seek authorisation from both UEFA and FIFA to move the game from Villarreal’s Estadio de la Cerámica to Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, a venue set to host seven matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The match is listed for matchday 17 of the league season, with the proposed new date being 20 December 2025.

“At its 11 August 2025 meeting, the RFEF board reviewed a joint request from Villarreal CF and FC Barcelona to stage their matchday 17 fixture in the United States,” the governing body said in a statement. “The federation will submit the proposal to UEFA as the first step before seeking FIFA’s approval for the game to be played in Miami.”

The plan has sparked a backlash from fan groups. The Spanish football supporters’ association (FASFE), together with organised Barcelona and Villarreal supporters, released a joint statement voicing “absolute, total and firm opposition” to the idea. They urged the RFEF and Spain’s national sports council to “stop this madness” and warned they would consider legal action if the move goes ahead.

While domestic league matches abroad remain unprecedented in Europe, one-off events like the Spanish Super Cup and Italian Super Cup have been held internationally in recent years. Serie A side AC Milan are also exploring the possibility of playing a league match against Como in Perth, Australia next February, due to the San Siro hosting the Winter Olympics opening ceremony. That proposal is still pending approval from FIFA, UEFA, Football Australia and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

FIFA regulations currently forbid domestic league matches from being staged overseas, though the governing body set up a working group last year to examine the issue. Previous attempts to take La Liga games to Miami, including Barcelona’s planned clashes with Atletico Madrid in 2024 and Girona in 2019, have been abandoned following logistical hurdles and resistance from football authorities and player unions.

The Premier League has also explored overseas matches in the past. In 2008, then-CEO Richard Scudamore’s “39th game” proposal to add an extra round of fixtures abroad was dropped after a public outcry from supporters and the media.
