Lamine Yamal nets historic first hat-trick as Barcelona extend la liga lead
Lamine Yamal delivered a coming-of-age performance on Sunday night, scoring the first hat-trick of his senior career to power Barcelona to a commanding 4-1 victory over Villarreal and keep the Catalan side at the summit of La Liga, Sport360NG reports.
The 18-year-old winger struck twice in the space of nine first-half minutes, both goals fashioned by the impressive Fermin Lopez, as Barcelona seized control before the interval.
Yamal opened the scoring after Lopez capitalised on a loose ball in midfield and slipped a precise pass into his path. The teenager steadied himself and calmly finished past Villarreal goalkeeper Luiz Junior. Moments later, he doubled the advantage in spectacular fashion, cutting in from the right, gliding beyond two defenders and firing emphatically inside the far post.
Villarreal responded after the restart, with Senegal midfielder Pape Gueye reducing the deficit from close range following a corner. The visitors, who had climbed to third in recent weeks on the back of three wins in four matches, threatened an equaliser when Ayoze Perez found himself with a clear sight of goal after a defensive mix-up, but the former Newcastle and Leicester forward dragged his effort wide.
Barcelona regained their composure following a brief spell of pressure, aided by the introduction of Pedri from the bench. The Spain international’s influence was immediate, helping steady the tempo before threading a precise through ball to Yamal, who completed his treble from a tight angle to take his league tally to 13 goals this season.
According to Opta, Yamal’s hat-trick, achieved at 18 years and 230 days, makes him the youngest player this century to register a first La Liga treble.
Substitute Robert Lewandowski added further gloss in stoppage time, finishing from close range after neat interplay between Pedri and Jules Kounde, sealing his 11th league goal of the campaign.
The result moves Barcelona four points clear of Real Madrid, who host Getafe on Monday, as the title race gathers momentum heading into the decisive stretch of the season.
