Newcastle land Ramsey in £40m deal from Aston Villa
Newcastle United have completed the signing of midfielder Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa in a transfer worth £40m, Sport360NG reports.
The 24-year-old, who has penned a five-year contract, becomes Eddie Howe’s fourth new arrival of the summer following deals for Anthony Elanga, Malick Thiaw and Aaron Ramsdale.
Ramsey, a product of Villa’s academy, spent 18 years with his boyhood club and featured 167 times for the first team before sealing the switch to St James’ Park.
“This is a massive step in my career, but once I knew the manager wanted me, the decision was easy,” Ramsey said after the move was confirmed. “Playing against Newcastle was always tough, the energy, the intensity, the fans. I feel my game fits into that style, and I can’t wait to be part of it now.”
Howe described his new signing as a player who perfectly matches Newcastle’s vision.
“Jacob gives us something different,” the Magpies boss said. “He’s young, ambitious and already has plenty of Premier League experience. His attacking drive makes him a real threat, and he showed his quality in Europe last season. We believe he’ll be a huge asset for us.”
Ramsey will continue to wear the number 41 shirt he donned at Villa and could make his Newcastle debut when they face Liverpool at St James’ Park on August 25.
A player built for Howe’s system
Ramsey’s move brings an emotional end to his long association with Villa, where he rose from the academy to become a key first-team player. However, the lure of working under Howe, whose coaching has already helped the likes of Anthony Gordon, Dan Burn, Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento progress into the England setup, proved decisive.
Described as athletic, versatile and eager to improve, Ramsey is expected to add depth to a Newcastle midfield that will be stretched across domestic and European competitions this season.
While the Magpies have strengthened well after a slow start to the transfer window, a new striker remains on their agenda following Callum Wilson’s exit. Brentford forward Yoane Wissa continues to be monitored as a possible solution.
