League Two Grimsby Knock Manchester United Out in Epic Shootout

Manchester United endured a humiliating Carabao Cup exit after losing a dramatic penalty shootout to League Two side Grimsby Town at Blundell Park, Sport360NG reports.

United had looked to have salvaged the match after a disastrous first half left them two goals down, with returning goalkeeper Andre Onana at fault for Grimsby’s second strike. Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren had put the Mariners ahead, before United substitutes Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire staged a late fightback, with Maguire equalising in the final minute.

However, Matheus Cunha missed United’s final penalty in the initial five, and Mbeumo’s second attempt struck the bar, handing Grimsby a stunning 12-11 shootout victory. The jubilant home fans celebrated with a pitch invasion, lingering in the stands long after the final whistle as manager David Artell and his players conducted post-match interviews following one of the club’s most memorable nights.

United manager Ruben Amorim appeared shell-shocked on the touchline as his team’s hopes of silverware evaporated at the first hurdle. From the outset, he endured chants of ‘sacked in the morning’ from the ecstatic home supporters, witnessing a scenario that mirrored his previous season’s struggles with United, which he had described as “maybe the worst” in the club’s history.

Onana’s error compounded United’s woes. The Cameroon international, who had been benched for the first two Premier League games of the season, struggled for composure and inexplicably dropped a cross into a crowded penalty area after 30 minutes. Warren, a former United academy graduate, capitalised on the mistake to score into an empty net.

Grimsby’s advantage was doubled when Vernam beat Onana with a low finish following a turnover by Kieran Green from Amad Diallo and Manuel Ugarte, with Darragh Burns delivering the decisive cross.

Amorim responded at halftime by introducing Bruno Fernandes, new signing Mbeumo, and defensive stalwart Matthijs de Ligt, attempting to turn the match around. Mbeumo pulled a goal back 15 minutes from time, and with further tactical adjustments seeing Mason Mount and Mbeumo pushed into wing-back roles, Maguire’s last-minute equaliser sent the tie to penalties.

Despite Cunha stepping up with hope of sealing victory, United’s shootout faltered, and Grimsby emerged triumphant in one of the biggest shocks in the club’s history.

United in Crisis

Chris Sutton highlighted the precarious position Amorim found himself in at halftime. “If Grimsby Town win tonight, I honestly don’t think Ruben Amorim can come back from this,” Sutton said. “It’s not just about losing; it’s the manner of the performance in the first half too.”

United had never before been beaten by a fourth-tier club. Previous Carabao Cup exits to lower-league sides include York in 1995 and MK Dons in 2014, while a 2006 defeat to Southend came against a Championship side in a similarly raucous stadium. This defeat, however, felt uniquely humiliating, with Amorim fielding a £200m attack and pairing Kobbie Mainoo with Fernandes in midfield, yet still failing to avoid catastrophe.

Grimsby Celebrate Historic Night

Amid the fallout at Old Trafford, Grimsby’s achievements cannot be overstated. From kickoff, Artell’s plan was clear: apply relentless pressure around United’s area, using the atmosphere to their advantage. The Mariners’ fans, who have endured two National League relegations in recent years, created a memorable environment that clearly unnerved the visitors.

With a stadium capacity of just 9,000, it was a spectacle few in attendance will ever forget, particularly since the two sides had not met since 1948. Vernam and Warren’s goals gave Grimsby a deserved lead, and despite United’s late surge, the Mariners held firm, ultimately securing a historic victory that will be remembered for years to come.
