Liverpool and Portugal international Diogo Jota has tragically died at the age of 28 following a fatal car accident in Spain.

The devastating crash, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday near Zamora, also claimed the life of his younger brother, André Silva, a 26-year-old professional footballer who played for Portuguese second-division side Penafiel.

According to the Guardia Civil, the fatal incident happened around 00:30 local time when the brothers’ Lamborghini suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking another vehicle. The car veered off the road and burst into flames, leaving no chance of survival.

Jota had only recently married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, with whom he shared three children. The couple’s wedding, held on June 22, was celebrated publicly through heartfelt social media posts just days before the accident.

On the pitch, Jota was a key figure for both club and country. He played an instrumental role in Liverpool’s Premier League-winning campaign last season and had been part of the Portugal squad that triumphed over Spain in the UEFA Nations League final in June.

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) expressed profound sorrow in a statement:
“Much more than a remarkable footballer with nearly 50 caps, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary individual, cherished by teammates and rivals alike. His joy was infectious, and he was a pillar of the community. The loss of Diogo and André Silva is a blow from which Portuguese football will struggle to recover. Their memory will be honoured every day.”

In tribute, the FPF has requested UEFA to observe a minute of silence before Portugal’s Women’s Euro match against Spain.

Jota began his professional journey with Paços de Ferreira before signing with Atlético Madrid in 2016. He later joined FC Porto on loan, where his brother André also came through the youth ranks. Jota eventually rose to prominence at Wolverhampton Wanderers before securing a move to Liverpool in 2020.

Porto paid tribute, stating:
“We are in mourning. With immense sadness, we offer our condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and André Silva. May they rest in peace.”

Jota earned 49 caps for Portugal, scoring 14 goals and contributing to their Nations League victories in both 2019 and 2025.

Reacting to the tragedy, Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro said:
“The sudden and tragic death of Diogo Jota and his brother is a heartbreaking loss. Diogo was an athlete who represented Portugal with pride and honour. My thoughts and deepest sympathies are with their family and the entire sporting community.”

The football world is united in mourning two lives taken far too soon.
