Arteta frustrated as Arsenal miss chance to widen lead after hard-fought draw at Chelsea

Arsenal Extend League Lead After Gruelling Week, but Arteta Regrets Missed Chance at Chelsea, Sport360NG reports.

Arsenal emerged from a demanding seven-day spell against Tottenham, Bayern Munich and Chelsea with two wins and a draw, an impressive return by any measure. Yet, as Mikel Arteta’s side left Stamford Bridge with a 1-1 draw on Sunday, there was a clear sense that the Premier League leaders felt an opportunity had slipped away.

The Gunners had delivered high-quality performances in their victories over Spurs and Bayern, but fatigue and squad disruptions made the trip to Chelsea particularly difficult. Preparations suffered another blow when key defender William Saliba was ruled out after picking up a knock in training. The France international will undergo further assessment in the coming days.

Given the circumstances, earning a point, secured through Mikel Merino’s second-half header, kept Arsenal five points clear at the top of the table and represented a solid outcome. However, with Chelsea reduced to 10 men for most of the match following Moises Caicedo’s dismissal, Arteta admitted his side had not capitalised on the advantage.

“It’s been a big week, starting with the derby,” Arteta said. “Then to play Bayern Munich three days later—and we lost players in those games. Today we had to use a defensive partnership we’ve never played before in a really difficult match.

“The captain is still not here, the nine is still not here, Kai is still not here, and we lost Leo in midweek as well. But the team had to react to that.”

Both Martin Ødegaard and Viktor Gyökeres came off the bench in the second half, offering encouraging signs as they work their way back to full fitness.

“I think overall it’s been a really positive week because the difficulty was immense,” Arteta added. “But I have this flavour that today we should have and could have won the game. That’s a learning point.”

Defensive Absences Expose Arsenal’s Set-Piece Vulnerability

Sunday’s match marked only the second time since August 2021 that Arsenal started a Premier League game without either Gabriel Magalhães or Saliba. Their absence affected more than just defensive stability, the Gunners also lacked their usual threat at set-pieces.

Without their two aerially dominant centre-backs, Arsenal’s corners, free-kicks and long throws lacked their usual effectiveness. Chelsea’s opener, scored by Trevoh Chalobah from a corner, only underlined the disruption.

“It’s been a headache,” Arteta admitted. “We’ve had to make a lot of changes for different reasons in the last few months. Saliba’s injury was very unexpected and happened yesterday.”

The manager turned to Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié as his centre-back partnership—deployed together for the first time in the Premier League.

“The beauty is having players so willing to play and connect with each other. We’ll build that relationship even better,” Arteta said. “Today was a great learning match for all of us and gives you the assurance that whoever is there will perform.”

Arteta also confirmed that Gabriel will remain sidelined for “weeks”, meaning Arsenal will continue to rely on their defensive understudies as the title race intensifies.
