Tottenham open discussions with Liverpool over Andy Robertson deal

Tottenham Hotspur have opened talks with Liverpool as they explore a potential move for left-back Andy Robertson, Sport360NG reports.

The 31-year-old Scotland international is approaching the final months of his contract at Anfield and has publicly admitted he remains uncertain about his long-term future. With the World Cup on the horizon, Robertson is keen to secure more regular playing time after making only four Premier League starts this season.

Sources have indicated that Spurs have made an initial approach, although negotiations are still at an early stage and no agreement has been reached.

Robertson joined Liverpool from Hull City in 2017 for £8 million and has since become one of the club’s most successful modern-era signings, registering 363 appearances. His latest outing came as a substitute in the 1-1 draw with Burnley on 17 January.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot recently highlighted Robertson’s continued importance to the squad, praising his professionalism following the arrival of summer signing Milos Kerkez, who has largely taken over the starting role at left-back. Should Robertson depart, Kerkez would be Slot’s only senior specialist option in that position, although Liverpool could consider recalling Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma.

Tottenham’s interest comes despite their relative strength at left-back. Brazilian defender Souza completed a move to north London on Thursday, while Destiny Udogie has been Thomas Frank’s first choice this season, with Djed Spence also capable of providing cover. Ben Davies had offered further depth, but the Wales international has been ruled out for the remainder of the campaign after suffering a broken ankle.

During his time on Merseyside, Robertson has collected nine major honours, including two Premier League titles and a Champions League crown.

Analysis: Why Robertson Appeals to Spurs

With injuries mounting across the squad, Tottenham’s defensive unit remains one of the more stable areas available to Thomas Frank. Of the eight players currently sidelined, only one is a defender, with Davies’ injury the sole setback at the back.

Frank already has several options at left-back, which makes the interest in Robertson appear surprising given Tottenham’s ongoing issues in midfield. However, what Spurs lack is experience. Joao Palhinha is the only available player aged 30 or above, while several of the squad’s senior figures are currently unavailable through injury.

Robertson, now 31, would bring a wealth of top-level experience and leadership. As Scotland captain, his presence could add authority and composure to a relatively young Tottenham squad, qualities that may prove valuable as the season reaches its decisive stages.
