Morocco lodges appeal against CAF sanctions over AFCON final incidents
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has confirmed that it will challenge the disciplinary sanctions imposed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in the aftermath of disturbances during the African Cup of Nations final, Sport360NG reports.
CAF’s Disciplinary Committee on Thursday announced a range of penalties against both Morocco and Senegal, citing acts of misconduct that overshadowed the tense final showdown.
In an official statement, the FRMF rejected the ruling, describing the sanctions as disproportionate and unjust. The Moroccan body disclosed that it has formally activated CAF’s judicial procedures by submitting an appeal against the decision.
According to the federation, the disciplinary measures fail to accurately reflect the events that unfolded during the final, arguing that Morocco’s role in the incident was wrongly assessed in CAF’s conclusions.
Officials familiar with the matter say the appeal will now be examined by CAF’s Appeal Committee in the coming days, a move that could suspend or delay the implementation of the sanctions pending a final outcome.
The appeal adds another layer to the controversy surrounding the AFCON final, which has continued to spark widespread debate within African football circles, as fans and stakeholders await CAF’s next steps.
