Brobbey’s late strike seals Sunderland comeback win in fiery tyne-wear derby
Brian Brobbey struck in stoppage time to hand Sunderland a dramatic comeback victory over Newcastle United in a pulsating Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park, Sport360NG reports.
Newcastle appeared on course to end their long wait for a home win in the fixture, dating back to 2010, when Anthony Gordon fired them ahead in the ninth minute. The goal came after Sunderland’s attempt to build from the back went wrong, with Luke O’Nien’s misplaced pass intercepted by Nick Woltemade, who teed up Gordon to register his 17th goal of the season.
The hosts nearly doubled their advantage before the interval, but Sven Botman’s header from Lewis Hall’s cross struck the post, leaving Sunderland within reach at the break.
The contest was briefly halted early in the second half after referee Anthony Taylor was alerted to alleged discriminatory abuse directed at Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida. Following a short delay and discussions with both benches, play resumed.
Sunderland responded strongly and found their equaliser in the 57th minute. Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale failed to deal convincingly with a delivery, allowing the ball to be recycled into the box. Brobbey’s effort was cleared off the line by Dan Burn, but Chemsdine Talbi reacted quickest to convert the rebound.
The visitors grew in confidence thereafter, with Noah Sadiki going close to putting them ahead, only to be denied by Ramsdale.
Sunderland’s persistence paid off in the closing moments when Brobbey capitalised on a rebound after his initial shot was saved, firing home from close range to spark wild celebrations among the travelling supporters.
The victory secured Sunderland’s first league double over their rivals since the 2014–15 season.
Newcastle’s European Hopes Suffer Setback
For Newcastle, the defeat compounds a difficult period following their heavy Champions League exit to Barcelona earlier in the week. Manager Eddie Howe had spoken pre-match about the importance of a swift return to European competition, but this result leaves those ambitions under threat.
At half-time, Newcastle were in a position to close the gap on the European places. However, Sunderland’s second-half resurgence turned the game on its head, exposing the hosts’ vulnerabilities.
Newcastle thought they had regained the lead midway through the second half when substitute Malick Thiaw headed home from a corner, but the effort was ruled out for offside and interference on goalkeeper Melker Ellborg.
The defeat sees Newcastle slip to 12th in the table, one place below Sunderland, dealing a significant blow to their hopes of securing continental football next season.
Despite a vibrant pre-match atmosphere, featuring coordinated flags, banners and a tifo display, the home crowd were left frustrated at full-time, as Sunderland claimed derby bragging rights with a memorable comeback victory.
