Italian star into first Wimbledon final after dominant display; Djokovic’s quest for 25th Grand Slam falters

Jannik Sinner has booked his place in the 2025 Wimbledon final with a commanding straight-sets victory over Novak Djokovic, ending the Serbian legend’s hopes of claiming a record 25th Grand Slam title.

The 23-year-old Italian produced a near-flawless performance to dispatch Djokovic 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 on Centre Court, setting up a blockbuster rematch with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, just weeks after their dramatic five-set clash in the French Open final.

Sinner, currently ranked world number three, is now through to his fifth major final and first at Wimbledon, where he will face Alcaraz in what promises to be another thrilling chapter in their fast-growing rivalry. The duo have now featured in each of the last six men’s Grand Slam finals, with Sinner looking to win his first major outside the hard courts and Alcaraz seeking a third consecutive title at SW19.

Djokovic, who has won Wimbledon seven times, had acknowledged before the tournament that this might be his best remaining shot at reaching 25 Grand Slam titles—a feat that would break his tie with Margaret Court for the most in history. But the 38-year-old was second-best for much of the contest, outplayed in all areas by Sinner’s aggressive shot-making, movement, and relentless baseline control.

While both players came into the match with lingering fitness concerns—Sinner nursing an elbow issue and Djokovic recovering from a fall in the quarter-finals—it was the younger man who looked fresher throughout. Though Djokovic took a medical timeout after the second set, he showed flashes of resistance in the third, breaking Sinner’s serve briefly, but ultimately could not halt the Italian’s momentum.

Sinner responded with a decisive five-game run to wrap up the match, saving break points with clutch serving before breaking Djokovic twice to seal the win. Despite a late push from the Serb, who saved two match points, Sinner closed it out confidently at the second time of asking.

“I’m really proud of the way I played today,” Sinner said afterward. “It’s always special to compete with someone like Novak, and now I’m looking forward to facing Carlos again. We had an amazing final in Paris, and I hope we can put on another great match for the fans here.”

Alcaraz, who advanced earlier in the day with a hard-fought four-set win over American fifth seed Taylor Fritz (6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 [8-6]), will now attempt to defend his Wimbledon crown in back-to-back finals against Sinner. The Spaniard came from two sets down to beat the Italian in Paris and holds the psychological edge heading into Sunday’s final.

As for Djokovic, the question now turns to what lies ahead. Once the undisputed force on grass, his latest defeat—coupled with recent injury struggles—raises doubts over whether he’ll return to this stage again.

He exited Centre Court to a standing ovation, acknowledging the crowd with a wave to all corners. With no clear timeline for his future, it may have been a farewell to Wimbledon’s biggest stage—or perhaps just another chapter in an extraordinary career nearing its twilight.
