Liverpool Seal £69m Deal for Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt

Liverpool have secured the signing of French striker Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt in a deal worth an initial £69 million, pending international clearance.

The 23-year-old completed his medical and agreed personal terms before the transfer was confirmed. He is expected to link up with the Reds’ squad during their pre-season tour of Asia later this week.

The total package for the former Frankfurt forward could rise to £79 million, including £10 million in performance-related add-ons.

Ekitike’s arrival takes Liverpool’s summer spending to over £250 million. He joins recent high-profile additions including Florian Wirtz who signed for a potential British-record £116 million and full-backs Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong, who cost a combined £70 million.

Newcastle United were also in the race for Ekitike earlier this month, having had a £70 million offer turned down. The Magpies’ striker Alexander Isak had also been on Liverpool’s radar.

Ekitike was in impressive form last season, scoring 15 goals and registering eight assists in 31 Bundesliga starts as Frankfurt finished third in the league. He led the German top flight in total shots (117) and ranked among the top six goal scorers.

Eintracht Frankfurt’s sporting director, Markus Krosche, praised the forward’s progress, saying:
“Hugo has grown tremendously during his time with us. He has been an exceptional player and a positive influence both on and off the field. This move is a well-deserved step forward in his career.”

Ekitike: A Tactical Asset with Attacking Flair

Ekitike’s journey to prominence has been marked by resilience and adaptability. After rising through the ranks at Reims and a brief spell at Paris Saint-Germain, where first-team opportunities were limited, he found a fresh start at Frankfurt, initially joining on loan in early 2024 before sealing a permanent move.

Under manager Dino Toppmöller, Ekitike thrived in various attacking roles. He partnered effectively with Omar Marmoush in the first half of last season until the Egyptian’s £63 million move to Manchester City in January. Frankfurt altered their system afterward, positioning Ekitike as a lone forward supported by two attacking midfielders.

Known for his ability to drift between roles, Ekitike doesn’t confine himself to the penalty area. His intelligent movement, positional awareness, and pressing ability make him a versatile threat in any tactical setup.

Room for Growth in Front of Goal

Statistically, Ekitike ranked among the Bundesliga’s top five players for goal contributions and attacking sequences last season. He also created 44 chances from open play more than any other forward in the league.

Despite his attacking contributions, he was less clinical than expected, converting just 12.8% of his 117 shots and underperforming his expected goals (xG) tally by 6.6 more than any player in Europe’s top five leagues.

Nevertheless, Liverpool believe Ekitike’s finishing can be refined under Jürgen Klopp’s guidance. With his natural flair, creative instincts, and tactical intelligence, the Frenchman is poised to become a key part of the Reds’ evolving front line.
