Just over a month after their five-hour marathon in the French Open final, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are set to face off once again — this time for the Wimbledon crown.

In a highly anticipated showdown on Sunday, the world’s top two players will renew their rivalry on Centre Court, only 35 days after delivering one of the all-time great Grand Slam matches in Paris.

Sinner, now ranked world number one, ended Novak Djokovic’s pursuit of a record-breaking 25th major in the semi-finals. Asked what fans can expect when he takes on Alcaraz again, the Italian kept expectations grounded:

“We all saw what happened last time — anything can happen,” he said. “Hopefully we can produce another great match. I’m not sure it can top the last one, but we’ll give everything.”

For those who missed their Roland Garros classic: Alcaraz staged a dramatic comeback from two sets down, saving three match points before sealing victory in an unforgettable contest marked by breathtaking rallies, supreme athleticism, and sheer mental grit.

Despite the epic nature of that match, the Spaniard hasn’t revisited it in full.

“I’ve only seen a few highlights,” Alcaraz said after his semi-final win over Taylor Fritz. “But I still think about it — it’s the best match I’ve played in my career. I know Jannik will push me again. I expect nothing less on Sunday.”

The rise of Alcaraz and Sinner signals a new era in men’s tennis following the dominance of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. The two have now shared the last six major titles and will secure a seventh between them at SW19.

This year marks only the second time in the Open era that the top two seeds have reached the men’s final at all three Grand Slams of the season — a feat last seen in 1978.

Even Djokovic acknowledged the changing landscape: “I keep getting to the final stages, the semis — but now it’s always Sinner or Alcaraz. They’re young, fast, fresh. And I go in half spent.”

Still, Sinner played down comparisons with the legendary ‘Big Three’:

“You can’t compare what Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic did over 15 years to what we’ve done in just a year and a half,” he said.

At just 22 and 23 respectively, Alcaraz and Sinner are shaping the sport’s future. Yet it’s Alcaraz who currently holds the edge — winning their last five encounters.

Sinner’s recent form is remarkable: since winning the China Open in September 2023, he has lost just 11 of 127 matches — five of those defeats have come at the hands of Alcaraz.

However, the Italian will take confidence from their last Wimbledon meeting in 2022, when he came out on top.

“That match feels like a long time ago,” Alcaraz reflected. “We’ve both evolved — not just on grass, but across all surfaces. Sunday will be a different story.”
