Kolo Touré Joins Manchester City First-Team Coaching Staff on Permanent contract
Manchester City have confirmed the permanent appointment of former defender Kolo Touré as an assistant coach under Pep Guardiola.
The 44-year-old Ivorian, who enjoyed a decorated playing career with both Arsenal and City, had been working with Guardiola’s team on a temporary basis during their victorious FIFA Club World Cup campaign earlier this summer. His promotion to a full-time role was announced by the club in a statement on Tuesday.
Touré’s elevation comes on the back of an impressive spell as Assistant Lead Coach with City’s Under-18 side. During his time with the academy squad, he helped steer the team to the Premier League Under-18 North title and an appearance in the FA Youth Cup final. Though the young Blues were narrowly beaten by Aston Villa in both showpiece games, Touré’s contributions were widely commended within the club.
“A Valuable Addition” — Hugo Viana
City’s Director of Football, Hugo Viana, expressed his enthusiasm about Touré’s integration into the first-team setup.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Kolo into the senior coaching team on a permanent basis,” said Viana. “His vast experience at the top level of the game, combined with his understanding of Manchester City’s identity, makes him an invaluable asset.
“His work with the Under-18s was exceptional, and having someone of his calibre involved in both academy and first-team environments will only strengthen our development pathway.”
Viana also highlighted Touré’s energy and personality as key qualities that made a strong impression during his time alongside Guardiola, Pep Lijnders, and James French over the summer.
Coaching Journey
Since retiring from playing, Touré has steadily built a diverse coaching résumé. He has previously served on the coaching staffs of the Ivory Coast national team, Celtic, and Leicester City, all under Brendan Rodgers. His most recent role was as manager of Wigan Athletic.
Returning now to Manchester City, where he lifted the Premier League trophy as a player, Touré takes up his new position aiming to contribute to further successes, this time from the touchline.
