Dubois Eyes Redemption Against Usyk in High-Stakes Rematch at Wembley
Venue: Wembley Stadium, London
Date: Saturday, 19 July
Daniel Dubois enters Saturday’s blockbuster rematch against Oleksandr Usyk at Wembley Stadium with three words defining his mindset: confidence, maturity, and chaos.
Nearly two years ago, Dubois ventured into enemy territory in Poland to challenge the formidable Ukrainian but came up short, stopped in the ninth round. Since then, the IBF champion has rebuilt with impressive wins, including a headline-grabbing knockout of Anthony Joshua.
Now, he stands on the cusp of history.
Victory over the undefeated WBA (Super), WBO, and WBC titleholder would make Dubois the first British fighter to unify the heavyweight division in the four-belt era and the first to become undisputed on home soil. However, 21 others have tried and failed to solve the Usyk puzzle.
Recapping the First Encounter
In their initial meeting, Usyk’s technical brilliance was too much for Dubois. The Ukrainian outclassed him in both accuracy and volume, landing nearly a quarter of his 359 punches compared to Dubois’ 16.2% accuracy from 290 attempts.
The fight wasn’t without controversy. In round five, Dubois floored Usyk with a punch ruled a low blow. The Ukrainian was given nearly four minutes to recover. Dubois’ camp believed it was a legitimate shot and have continued to voice their frustration over the decision.
Is the Body the Key?
Trainer Don Charles has made it clear that targeting Usyk’s midsection is central to their game plan. Speaking at the pre-fight press conference in April, Charles accused Usyk of “conning the referee” and even joked that he deserved an Oscar.
Usyk, however, has shrugged off the criticism. His team insists his core is a strength, not a weakness and during an open workout this week, he invited teammates to repeatedly strike his torso with foam sticks, mocking suggestions of fragility.
Still, the numbers suggest Dubois has had success going to the body. In his fight against Jarrell Miller, he landed 50 body shots. Against Filip Hrgovic, it was 17 over eight rounds. In his knockout win over Joshua, 10 body shots played a key role.
Expect a Physical, Gritty Battle
Dubois and Charles have developed a strong bond over their past four bouts together. They’ve spent time not just in the gym but in quiet moments between sessions building trust and focus that could be crucial on fight night.
Charles continues to emphasise the importance of the “second phase” following up initial punches to prevent Usyk from evading and countering. In their first meeting, Dubois threw significantly fewer punches than his career average, a statistic they’re keen to address.
According to boxing pundit Steve Bunce, the approach will be more about positioning and pressure than sheer volume. “Dubois won’t necessarily throw more, but he’ll aim to close the distance and stay in range,” Bunce said. “Expect to see rough tactics shoulder bumps, forearms. It’s going to get messy.”
‘Seek and Destroy’: Dubois Ready for the Moment
When Dubois faced Usyk the first time, he was greeted by a raucous crowd of 40,000 Ukrainian fans in Wroclaw and the pressure appeared to get to him. Usyk controlled the pace, established his jab early, and never looked back.
This time, Dubois says he’s different.
He believes the experience and confidence gained from recent victories have transformed him into a more complete fighter one ready to take the centre of the ring and dictate the tempo.
“As soon as that first bell rings, I’m going to seek and destroy. I’m bringing chaos,” he told BBC Sport. “This is my moment and I’m going to take it.”
Now, under the bright lights of Wembley and with a capacity crowd behind him, Dubois faces the biggest test of his career once again but this time, on his own turf.
