Junior D’Tigress Aim for Redemption Against Argentina in Classification Clash
No longer in contention for a podium finish, Nigeria’s U-19 women’s basketball team will take on Argentina today (Friday) as classification matches begin at the FIBA U-19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Brno, Czech Republic.
After a 77-51 loss to Hungary in the round of 16 on Wednesday, Coach Juliana Akhere’s squad now shifts focus to securing a respectable finish between 9th and 16th place. Their next test comes at the Starez Arena Vodova Hall, where they will square off against a struggling Argentine side.
Nigeria, making their debut at the global tournament, have shown glimpses of promise. Over the course of the competition, the team has averaged 61.8 points, 42.3 rebounds, and 11.8 assists per game. Their free throw accuracy stands at 65.8%, while their field goal conversion sits at 33.1% for two-pointers and 21.2% from beyond the arc.
Argentina, in contrast, have endured a tough campaign. They’ve posted 46.5 points, 32 rebounds, and 12.3 assists per game. The South Americans shoot 64.6% from the free throw line, with shooting percentages of 39.2% and 22.6% for two- and three-point attempts, respectively.
Nigeria opened their Group B campaign with a stunning victory over China but were subsequently beaten by Canada and Portugal, finishing third in their group with one win and two defeats. Their exit from title contention was confirmed with the knockout loss to Hungary.
Argentina have fared worse, having lost all four of their matches. They opened with a 68-47 defeat to Spain, followed by a 77-49 loss to hosts Czechia. The South Americans then fell 83-44 to Japan before being outclassed 95-46 by Australia in the round of 16.
For Nigeria, Toby Nweke has emerged as the standout performer, averaging 11.5 points per game and registering back-to-back double-digit scoring efforts. Argentina’s key contributor, Nerea Lagowski, has averaged nine points per game.
The winner of today’s fixture will advance to another classification match, where they’ll meet the victor of the Brazil vs South Korea encounter.
