FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup: Hungary End Nigeria’s Campaign in Round of 16
Nigeria’s Junior D’Tigress have been eliminated from the FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup following a 77-51 defeat to Hungary on Wednesday in Czechia.
Despite a promising start that saw both teams tied at 9-9 after the first quarter, the Nigerian side struggled to keep up with their European opponents as the game progressed. Hungary took control in the second quarter, outscoring Nigeria 30-12 to establish a commanding lead.
Junior D’Tigress showed resilience in the third quarter, but their 15-16 effort wasn’t enough to close the gap. Hungary maintained their composure in the final quarter, edging it 16-15 to seal a comfortable victory.
Kinga Jisepovits was the standout performer for Hungary, leading her team with 19 points, while Eliza Farbas pulled down 13 rebounds. For Nigeria, Tobenna Nweke finished with 12 points, and Francis Chukwu contributed 9 rebounds.
Despite the loss, Nigeria’s U19 squad made history by becoming the first African team to win a game at the tournament and reach the round of 16, an encouraging sign for the growth of women’s basketball on the continent.
