Arsenal Complete Signing of Valencia Defender Cristhian Mosquera
Arsenal have strengthened their defensive options with the acquisition of Spanish youngster Cristhian Mosquera from Valencia in a deal worth around €15 million (£13 million).
The 21-year-old has penned a five-year deal with the North London club, which includes the option of a 12-month extension. Comfortable playing both as a centre-back and right-back, Mosquera is expected to fill the void left by Takehiro Tomiyasu, who recently departed the Emirates after mutually terminating his contract.
Mosquera has been part of the Valencia setup since 2016, joining the club’s academy at the age of 12. He broke into the senior team in 2022, making history as the youngest centre-back to feature for the La Liga outfit. Since then, he has made 90 senior appearances and was ever-present during the 2024–25 season, playing 37 of Valencia’s 38 league matches as they finished mid-table in 12th.
The Spanish U21 international becomes Arsenal’s fifth major signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard and Noni Madueke. Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres is also reportedly on the verge of joining Mikel Arteta’s side.
Mosquera is set to link up with the Arsenal squad on their pre-season tour in Asia. Valencia had already cleared him to travel ahead of the official confirmation of his transfer. The Gunners recently claimed a 1-0 win over AC Milan in Singapore and are scheduled to face Newcastle United at the same venue on Sunday before heading to Hong Kong for a derby clash against Tottenham Hotspur.
What Mosquera Brings to Arsenal – Analysis
Mosquera’s arrival is seen as a strategic move by Arsenal, who have added a young and reliable defender to bolster their squad depth. His durability was evident last season, where he clocked the most minutes for Valencia and ranked second among all outfield players in La Liga.
Manager Mikel Arteta will value both Mosquera’s fitness record and his positional flexibility across the backline, particularly after an injury-hit campaign. While the transition to Premier League football may take time, the presence of several Spanish-speaking teammates at the Emirates should ease his adaptation process.
With youth, versatility, and experience under his belt, Mosquera adds further depth and resilience to a side aiming to challenge on multiple fronts this season.
