Rice ‘didn’t like’ Madueke signing backlash from fans
Declan Rice Defends Madueke Signing, Targets Higher Goal Tally for New Season
Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice has spoken out in support of new signing Noni Madueke, criticizing the negative fan response that followed the winger’s arrival from Chelsea.
Madueke completed his move to the Emirates last week in a deal worth an initial £48.5 million, bolstering Mikel Arteta’s attacking options ahead of the new campaign. However, the transfer sparked a backlash on social media, with hashtags like #NoToMadueke trending and an online petition against the signing amassing over 5,000 signatures.
Reacting to the criticism after Arsenal’s 1-0 pre-season win over AC Milan in Singapore, Rice said:
“I didn’t like the reaction online. I know how determined Noni is, and I’ve spoken to him, he’s ready to show what he’s capable of this season. He’s hungry, he wants to be here, and that’s exactly the kind of player we want in the squad.”
Rice added that the team, including players and staff, is confident in Madueke’s potential.
“We know what kind of player we’re getting. He’s going to surprise a lot of people,” he said.
A Warm Welcome
As part of Madueke’s introduction to the club, Rice wrote a personal welcome letter that featured in Arsenal’s official signing announcement video. The midfielder said the idea came from the club and was meant to help the 23-year-old winger feel embraced from day one.
“He messaged me to say he really appreciated it. It was a nice little gesture to make him feel at home.”
Madueke is expected to provide cover and competition for Bukayo Saka on the right flank and could also challenge Gabriel Martinelli for a spot on the left. He arrives after scoring 20 goals in 92 appearances for Chelsea over the past two seasons.
His dribbling and direct style are seen as key assets for Arsenal, who have occasionally struggled to break down deep, defensive blocks.
“When your first instinct is to take on your man, that’s such a valuable trait,” said Rice. “Adding that to our squad will be massive. Let’s be honest, last year we lacked depth, especially when injuries hit. This season, we’ll have more rotation options across competitions, and that’s crucial.”
Rice Sets Personal Goals
Rice also opened up about his own ambitions for the coming season. With Arsenal bringing in Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard to strengthen midfield, the 25-year-old is expected to continue in the more advanced role he played toward the end of last season.
Having registered nine goals and ten assists in all competitions last term, Rice is aiming for even more.
“I’ve set big targets for myself. I want to score more, assist more, and make an impact throughout the entire season, not just at the back end.”
He admitted the early part of last season fell short of his own standards, partly due to fatigue following the Euro 2024 final and a short summer break.
“The beginning of last season wasn’t at the level I expect from myself. But now, I’ve got my eyes on improvement. I think the best players always push themselves, and that’s exactly what I’m trying to do.”
With Arsenal actively reshaping their squad, including the recent arrivals of Kepa Arrizabalaga and Cristhian Mosquera and with Viktor Gyokeres reportedly close, the Gunners look poised for another strong title push. And with Rice embracing a more attacking role, fans may soon see the best version of him yet.
