Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem has expressed his excitement after sealing a return to French Ligue 1 side FC Nantes from Major League Soccer outfit Colorado Rapids.

The 28-year-old signed a three-year contract that will keep him at the Stade de la Beaujoire until the summer of 2028, marking a second stint with the club after a loan spell during the 2017/2018 season.

Awaziem, who featured 20 times for the Rapids this season, all as a starter, registered an assist in their 3-2 victory over San Diego FC in April. Prior to joining Colorado, he made seven starts for FC Cincinnati, providing two assists.

Speaking on his move back to France, the Nigeria international said returning to Nantes felt like coming home.

“As soon as the opportunity came, I didn’t hesitate. Nantes feels like home to me,” Awaziem said. “The people, the atmosphere, everything about the club is special. I’ve been looking forward to being in this environment again.”

He also voiced his determination to help the team push for success.

“Sportingly, I’m here to give my best, to help the club reach its goals, win titles, and compete at the top level. I want to play my part in bringing Nantes back to where it belongs.”

Colorado Rapids president Pádraig Smith thanked the Nigerian defender for his contributions, saying, “We’re appreciative of Chido’s efforts during his time here and wish him all the best in this next step of his career.”

FC Nantes, in an official statement, welcomed Awaziem back, highlighting the growth he has experienced since his initial spell at the club.

“He was still developing when he first joined us, learning from seasoned players like Diego Carlos, Andrei Girotto and Nicolas Pallois. He returns today as a more mature and complete player,” the club noted.

Awaziem began his football journey with El Kanemi Warriors in Nigeria before joining FC Porto’s youth academy in 2014. He made his senior debut in 2016 and has since played professionally in Portugal, Spain, Turkey, Croatia, and the United States.

Since making his international debut in 2017 against South Africa, he has earned 34 caps for the Super Eagles, featuring at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and appearing in three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
