World 100m hurdles record holder, Tobi Amusan, reaffirmed her dominance on Sunday at the 2025 Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) National Trials, storming to her fifth national title in Lagos, Sport360NG reports.

Competing at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex, the 28-year-old got off to a blistering start and powered through the finish line in 12.57 seconds to comfortably secure first place.

Amusan was followed by emerging talent Adaobi Tabugbo, who clocked 13.03s to take second, while Faith Osamuyi settled for third in 13.36s.

Her victory further strengthens her momentum ahead of the World Athletics Championships set for September in Tokyo, Japan.

In the men’s 400m, Gafar Badmus raced to victory in 45.71s, edging out Ezekiel Asuquo (46.29s) and David Akhalu (46.91s) for the national title.

The women’s 400m, however, delivered a major upset as veteran sprinter Patience Okon-George was disqualified in the final. Rising star and African U-20 champion, Favour Onyah, took full advantage, clinching the title in 52.69s. Opeyemi Deborah Oke and Anita Enaruna followed in second and third respectively.

There was also a changing of the guard in the women’s 100m, where Chioma Nweke dethroned Olayinka Olajide to claim her first national crown. The African U-20 champion crossed the line in 11.27s, ahead of Olajide (11.39s) and Iyanuoluwa Bada (11.45s).

Speaking after her victory, an elated Nweke told PUNCH Sports Extra, “I feel very amazing. It feels good to become a national champion.”

Looking ahead, she added, “I have to go back and try to qualify for the Commonwealth Games next year.”
