The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has extended financial support towards the funeral ceremonies of two former Super Eagles captains, Christian “Chairman” Chukwu and Peter “Dodo Mayana” Rufai, Sport360NG reports.

Chukwu, who famously led Nigeria to its maiden Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980, passed away on April 12 in Enugu and was laid to rest on Saturday in his hometown of Obe after a week of commemorative events.

The NFF delegation at the burial was led by Chief George Aluo, Chairman of the Nigeria National League, who represented NFF President Ibrahim Gusau. Also in attendance were the Federation’s Director of Legal Services, Barrister Okey Obi, and Anambra FA Chairman, Chikelue Iloenyosi.

Delivering Gusau’s tribute, Aluo praised Chukwu’s outstanding service to the nation and his exemplary leadership, both on and off the pitch.

During a night of tributes on Thursday, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah announced the retirement of Chukwu’s iconic No. 5 jersey at Enugu Rangers and pledged that his administration would work with the Federal Government and the NFF to further immortalise the legendary defender.

“For me, and for many others, it was impossible to encounter Chairman without being inspired by his humility and simplicity,” Mbah said during the burial ceremony.

Meanwhile, arrangements have been concluded for the funeral of Rufai, who captained Nigeria at its debut FIFA World Cup in the USA in 1994. His wake will be held on Thursday at his residence in Amuwo-Odofin, Lagos, followed by a funeral mass on Friday at the Catholic Church of Visitation, Festac Town, before his interment.

The NFF has confirmed that a strong delegation will also attend Rufai’s funeral activities. The former goalkeeper, who earned medals in three AFCON tournaments, including gold in 1994 and two silver medals, remains one of Nigeria’s most celebrated shot-stoppers.
