“Promises Were Broken” – Isak Draws Line Under Newcastle Future

Alexander Isak has accused Newcastle United of breaking promises and insists his relationship with the club has reached breaking point, as speculation over a possible move to Liverpool rumbles on, Sport360NG reports.

It has been almost three weeks since Newcastle rejected Liverpool’s £110m offer for the Sweden striker, who believes he was given assurances he could leave if a major club met the right valuation.

In a statement posted on Instagram, the 25-year-old explained why he skipped the Professional Footballers’ Association awards, despite being named in the Premier League Team of the Season.

“I’ve stayed quiet while others have spoken for me,” Isak wrote. “That silence has allowed false stories to spread about what was agreed privately. Promises were made, and the club has long known my position. When trust is broken, the relationship cannot continue. Change is in the best interests of everyone.”

Newcastle responded by stressing no guarantees had ever been given that Isak could depart this summer. “Alex remains under contract and we have been clear about our position. We want to keep our best players,” the club said in a statement, adding that the “conditions of a sale” have not been met.

Liverpool Interest Stalls

Liverpool are yet to return with an improved bid, but sources suggest their next approach could exceed £120m. Any move may depend on Newcastle finding not one but two new strikers, with Eddie Howe’s side short in attack after Callum Wilson’s exit.

The Magpies have already strengthened elsewhere, bringing in Jacob Ramsey (£40m), Malick Thiaw (£34.6m), Anthony Elanga (£55m) and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale on loan, but none of those additions solve their striker problem.

Targets have included Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, valued at over £40m, and Wolves forward Jorgen Strand Larsen, though neither deal has progressed. Missing out earlier in the summer on Hugo Ekitike, Benjamin Sesko and Joao Pedro underlined the difficulty of sourcing goalscorers in a market where prices have surged.

A Delicate Balancing Act

Howe has been open about Newcastle’s need for forwards, admitting after Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Aston Villa: “It’s not like we are looking at any other area.” But the club remain wary of overspending, knowing it could limit future recruitment under Profit and Sustainability Rules.

If no deal is struck before the 1 September deadline, Howe says the door is still open for Isak to return to the squad. Newcastle reiterated that stance in their own statement: “Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready.”

Reintegration may not be simple. Some Newcastle fans labelled the Swede “greedy” at the weekend, and he continues to train separately from the first team. Yet with few elite strikers left on the market, Newcastle may conclude that restoring relations with Isak is the most practical outcome.

For now, Liverpool wait, Newcastle search, and Isak’s future hangs in the balance.
