Wissa Accuses Brentford of Blocking Newcastle Move, Demands Exit Before Deadline
Yoane Wissa has gone public with his frustration at Brentford, accusing the club of reneging on promises to allow him to leave amid Newcastle United’s interest, Sport360NG reports.
With the transfer window closing on Monday evening, the DR Congo striker claims he was assured he could move on if a “reasonable offer” arrived this summer, insisting he has those assurances in writing. However, Brentford have rejected two bids from Newcastle, the latest worth £35m plus £5m in add-ons, and are now said to be holding out for closer to £65m.
In a strongly worded statement posted on social media on Sunday, Wissa said:
“I have stayed silent for much of the summer, but with just hours left of the transfer window, I feel compelled to make it clear that I want to leave Brentford. The club are unduly standing in my way despite a series of fair offers. This has left me in a frustrating position, and it saddens me to write this.”
He added: “I ask Brentford’s owners and directors to honour their promise to let me go in the final hours of the window. I have not acted unprofessionally, and I want to leave on good terms, but I must do what is right for my career and family.”
Wissa, 27, has not trained regularly with the first team this season and previously cut short Brentford’s pre-season camp in Portugal to press his case for a move. He has also removed all references to the club from his social media accounts.
Since joining Brentford from Lorient in 2021, Wissa has scored 49 goals in 149 appearances, including 19 in the Premier League last season.
The Bees, who have already lost Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United in a £65m deal this summer, moved to sign Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth for a club-record £42.5m fee.
Wissa’s push for a transfer comes as Newcastle forward Alexander Isak is also attempting to force an exit, with Liverpool circling. Both players argue they were given verbal assurances about being allowed to leave, though Wissa insists he has written proof.
The window closes at 19:00 BST on Monday, leaving little time for a resolution.
BBC Sport has contacted Brentford for comment.
