Postecoglou Named Nottingham Forest Head Coach After Nuno Exit

Ange Postecoglou has been confirmed as Nottingham Forest’s new head coach, stepping in after the dismissal of Nuno Espírito Santo, Sport360NG reports.

Nuno’s departure was announced late on Monday night, ending his 21-month spell at the City Ground and coming just three games into the new campaign.

Postecoglou, 60, returns to the dugout three months after leaving Tottenham Hotspur, where he endured a disappointing Premier League season that saw Spurs finish 17th. However, he ended his reign on a high by guiding the north London club to Europa League glory, their first major silverware in 17 years.

The Australian will be formally introduced to the media on Thursday afternoon, with owner Evangelos Marinakis hailing his appointment as a statement of intent.

“We are bringing in a coach with a proven track record of winning trophies at the highest level,” said Marinakis. “His experience and desire to build something special here at Forest makes him the right man to help us achieve our ambitions.”

Forest currently sit 10th in the Premier League, having collected four points from their opening three fixtures. Nuno’s final game in charge was a 3-0 loss to West Ham before the international break.

The Portuguese tactician, 51, had taken over in December 2023 after Steve Cooper’s departure and immediately stabilised the club, ensuring survival. He went on to lead Forest to seventh place last season, their best finish since 1995, which secured European football for the first time in three decades.

Despite that success, his future had been in doubt after he admitted his relationship with Marinakis had soured, with reports also pointing to tension with sporting director Edu.

Marinakis explained the club’s next step:

“Having established ourselves in the Premier League and secured European qualification, the ambition now is to compete with the very best and fight for trophies. Ange has the credentials to take us forward.”

Mixed Reaction to Nuno’s Exit

News of Nuno’s dismissal caught many Forest players off guard, particularly those away on international duty. Callum Hudson-Odoi, who recently signed a new three-year deal, publicly thanked his former manager on social media, writing: “I learned a lot from you and made some great memories. I wish you nothing but the best.”

Postecoglou’s first test comes on Saturday when Forest travel to Arsenal. He becomes the club’s eighth permanent manager since Marinakis assumed ownership in 2017.

Postecoglou’s Spurs Chapter

At Tottenham, Postecoglou’s reign was turbulent. Spurs slumped to 17th last season, losing 22 league games and conceding 65 goals. Yet he delivered a historic Europa League triumph, beating Manchester United in the final to secure Champions League football.

Although the trophy was hailed as one of Spurs’ greatest moments, it wasn’t enough to save his job, and he was dismissed just over two weeks later.

A Distinctive Style of Play

Known for high-intensity football, Postecoglou typically deploys a 4-3-3 or 4-4-1-1 system, demanding quick, possession-based play and aggressive pressing. His approach contrasts sharply with Nuno’s counter-attacking setup, raising questions about how Forest’s current squad will adapt.

Players such as James McAtee, Douglas Luiz, and Oleksandr Zinchenko, all with roots in Manchester City’s system, could thrive under a more technical style, while attackers like Omari Hutchinson and Hudson-Odoi may benefit from greater freedom on the ball.

However, defenders used to operating in a deep block under Nuno could find the transition challenging, with Postecoglou often preferring a much higher line.

A Career of Silverware

Before moving to the Premier League, Postecoglou built an impressive résumé. He won two A-League titles with Brisbane Roar, lifted the 2015 Asian Cup with Australia, claimed the J-League title with Yokohama F. Marinos, and collected five trophies in two years at Celtic, including successive Scottish Premiership crowns.

With a reputation for both entertaining football and delivering silverware, Forest will hope Postecoglou’s arrival marks the start of a new era at the City Ground.
