Nigerian Trio Face Major Premier League Tests This Weekend
Three Super Eagles stars are set for stern Premier League assignments as Frank Onyeka’s Brentford meet Manchester United, Christantus Uche’s Crystal Palace take on Liverpool, and Tolu Arokodare’s Wolverhampton Wanderers travel to Tottenham Hotspur, Sport360NG reports.
All three fixtures pit the Nigerian players against some of England’s most successful clubs in games that could prove decisive for their teams’ early-season fortunes.
At Selhurst Park, Uche will be aiming for his first league start since joining Palace from Getafe on deadline day. The 22-year-old midfielder has featured twice off the bench but is yet to convince Oliver Glasner to hand him a place in the starting line-up. Palace, who have gone 11 Premier League games unbeaten, their longest such run since 1990, host defending champions Liverpool in one of the weekend’s headline fixtures.
The Eagles have conceded just two goals all season, the joint-best defensive record alongside Arsenal. However, Liverpool arrive in south London with a dominant recent record, unbeaten in 10 league visits to Palace, while also chasing a sixth straight win that would strengthen their position at the top of the table.
In west London, Onyeka’s Brentford welcome Manchester United as both sides seek momentum after stuttering starts. The Bees, who have managed just four points from their opening six matches, sit 17th in the table and are already under pressure. New head coach Keith Andrews is still searching for consistency, with his team having dropped eight points from winning positions.
United, meanwhile, sit 11th and head into the clash relieved after a narrow 2-1 win over Chelsea last weekend. But Ruben Amorim’s men are winless in their last seven league games away from Old Trafford and have historically struggled in London, losing 15 of their last 24 visits to the capital.
Later in the evening, Arokodare’s Wolves face Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as they look to register their first points of the season. The Nigerian striker, who arrived from Genk last month, scored his debut goal in midweek during the EFL Cup victory over Everton and will be eager to make an impact in the league.
Wolves remain bottom of the table after five straight defeats, a run only three other clubs have endured at the start of a Premier League campaign. Yet history offers encouragement: they have beaten Spurs in four of their last five league meetings.
Tottenham, now under Thomas Frank, have started brightly with 10 points from five games, double the tally his predecessor Ange Postecoglou managed in his final dozen matches.
With Onyeka, Uche and Arokodare all set for key roles, the weekend presents a significant test of both their individual progress and their clubs’ ambitions.
