Uche’s Palace frustration grows as limited minutes threaten AFCON chances
Nigeria forward Christantus Uche has shared an emotional message hinting at mounting frustration after a difficult first half of the season at Crystal Palace, Sport360NG reports.
The 22-year-old moved to Selhurst Park on transfer deadline day following an impressive start to the campaign with Getafe, where he recorded a goal and an assist in three La Liga outings. His loan to Palace included a conditional €20m purchase clause tied to a set number of starts.
However, the expected Premier League breakthrough has not materialised. Under manager Oliver Glasner, Uche has struggled for opportunities, making just one start in nine appearances across all competitions and accumulating only 124 minutes of football.
It marks a stark contrast to the optimism surrounding his Super Eagles debut in June and his standout season in Spain last year. Although named in Nigeria’s 55-man provisional squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, his reduced game time now places his chances of making the final 28-man selection at risk.
Uche took to Instagram on Thursday to express his feelings, writing: “It hurts when you go through something that kills you inside, but you have to act like it doesn’t bother you at all. Keep believing & have faith in all things you do.”
Uncertainty also surrounds the forward’s long-term future. Conflicting reports from England and Spain suggest Palace may be reluctant to trigger the €20m clause, with Glasner reportedly unconvinced that Uche fits into his plans.
Complicating matters further, FIFA rules prevent players from representing more than two clubs in a single season. Having already played for Getafe and Palace, the striker cannot join a third team in January unless he returns to Getafe under a loan break clause.
For now, Uche faces a challenging period: limited action in England, restricted transfer options, and an AFCON place hanging in the balance. His immediate future may depend on whether Palace increase his involvement or allow a mid-season return to Spain.
