Joao Pedro haunts Newcastle as Chelsea rally from two-goal deficit at St James’ Park

Joao Pedro came back to haunt former admirers Newcastle United as Chelsea staged a spirited recovery from two goals down to earn a 2-2 Premier League draw at a charged St James’ Park, Sport360NG reports.

Newcastle appeared firmly in control at the interval after a clinical first-half double from Nick Woltemade put Eddie Howe’s side two goals clear. The hosts had been aggressive from the outset and were rewarded with a commanding advantage that left Chelsea facing an uphill task.

However, Newcastle’s vulnerability from winning positions, they have now dropped more points than any other Premier League side this season, resurfaced after the break. The mood inside the stadium shifted just minutes into the second half when Chelsea captain Reece James curled a superb 25-yard free-kick into the top corner to halve the deficit.

Tensions rose soon after when Newcastle appeals for a penalty were waved away following a challenge by Trevoh Chalobah on Anthony Gordon inside the area, a decision that drew loud protests from the home supporters.

Chelsea seized the momentum, and Joao Pedro, who chose a move to Stamford Bridge over Newcastle last summer, delivered the equaliser. The Brazilian capitalised on a defensive slip, racing through on goal before calmly finishing past Aaron Ramsdale to silence the home crowd.

The match opened up in the closing stages, with both sides pushing for a winner. Newcastle substitute Harvey Barnes came closest, but he fired a late volley wide, prompting visible frustration from Howe on the touchline.

The result leaves Chelsea fourth in the table, six points clear of Newcastle, who remain 11th for now after another afternoon of missed opportunity.

Newcastle Analysis: Familiar Story of Points Dropped

Newcastle’s season has been defined by inconsistency, and this contest followed a familiar pattern. Howe’s side were impressive before the interval, showing intensity and purpose as Woltemade made amends for last week’s derby disappointment.

After Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez produced a fine reflex save to deny Gordon, Woltemade reacted quickest to blast the loose ball into the roof of the net. He doubled his tally before the break, diverting Gordon’s low cross into the corner for his seventh goal of the campaign.

Yet the energy and control that characterised Newcastle’s first-half display faded after the restart. Once Chelsea pulled a goal back, the hosts struggled to regain their authority and were ultimately left lamenting both dropped points and contentious refereeing decisions.

The final whistle was met with a chorus of boos as referee Andy Madley and his officials left the pitch, underlining the growing frustration among the home support.

Chelsea Analysis: Maresca Sees Character and Response

For Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca, the draw represented a timely response after a turbulent week off the pitch. The Italian had spoken of enduring a difficult few days following last weekend’s victory over Everton, before dismissing speculation linking him with the Manchester City job.

On the field, his players responded after half-time. James set the tone with a captain’s performance, and Chelsea grew in confidence as the game progressed.

Joao Pedro’s composed finish completed the comeback and sparked jubilant celebrations from Maresca on the touchline. In doing so, Chelsea avoided defeat in a Premier League away match despite trailing by two or more goals at the interval for only the fourth time in their history.

It may yet prove a valuable point in their push for a top-four finish.
