Nottingham Forest to rename stand in honour of club legend John Robertson
Nottingham Forest will rename a stand at the City Ground to pay tribute to John Robertson, the club’s celebrated winger who passed away this week at the age of 72, Sport360NG reports.
Robertson, widely regarded as one of Forest’s greatest players, scored the decisive goal in the club’s 1980 European Cup triumph over Hamburg and provided the assist for Trevor Francis’s winner in the previous season’s final against Malmo.
During his illustrious career with Forest, Robertson also helped the team secure First and Second Division titles, the UEFA Super Cup, two Football League Cups, the 1978 FA Charity Shield, and the Anglo-Scottish Cup.
Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis described the renaming of the Bridgford Stand to “The John Robertson Stand” as a lasting tribute to the winger’s immense contributions.
“This week is one of profound sadness for everyone connected with Nottingham Forest as we mourn the passing of John Robertson, a true legend of this great club,” Marinakis said. “I extend my sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and all who loved him. Renaming the stand ensures that his legacy, and our great hero, will forever be remembered.”
The City Ground already features stands named after former manager Brian Clough and former goalkeeper and assistant manager Peter Taylor. Robertson was voted fans’ favourite Forest player in a 2015 Nottingham Post poll.
Beyond his club achievements, Robertson earned 28 caps for Scotland, famously scoring the winner against England in 1981 and netting against New Zealand at the 1982 World Cup. He later worked as assistant manager under former Forest teammate Martin O’Neill at clubs including Wycombe Wanderers, Norwich City, Leicester City, Celtic, and Aston Villa.
