Vinicius Jr’s bond with the Bernabeu under strain despite match-winning impact

When Vinicius Junior opened the scoring in Real Madrid’s 2–1 victory over Rayo Vallecano, his response carried as much meaning as the goal itself, Sport360NG reports.

The Brazilian sprinted towards the stands, repeatedly kissing the club crest before urging the Bernabeu crowd to raise the volume. Throughout the evening he continued to gesture towards the ultras, actively seeking their backing in a stadium where his relationship with supporters has grown increasingly complex.

It appeared to be a deliberate statement, a public reaffirmation of commitment from a player who has, in recent months, become a lightning rod for frustration among sections of the home crowd.

Vinicius was again whistled during Sunday’s match, despite scoring a decisive goal. His treatment has become emblematic of wider unrest at Real Madrid, prompting the question of why one of the club’s most influential players continues to divide opinion.

A focal point for frustration

Madrid’s season has fallen short of expectations. Early elimination from the Copa del Rey by second-tier opposition, a failure to secure automatic Champions League qualification, and a La Liga title race led by Barcelona have all heightened discontent.

A narrow and laboured home win over a Rayo side hovering above the relegation zone did little to ease concerns, nor did the fact the club is already working under its second head coach of the campaign.

In that context, Vinicius has increasingly become the figure on whom frustration is projected.

His statistical output has dipped. Sunday’s strike was his first league goal since early October, and while his eight goals across all competitions make him Madrid’s second-highest scorer this season, the contrast with Kylian Mbappe’s prolific return has sharpened scrutiny.

Expectation, rather than indifference, often dictates criticism at the Bernabeu.

Perception and identity

BBC Sport columnist Guillem Balague believes Vinicius is judged not only on performances but on how closely he aligns with the traditional image of a Real Madrid player.

“Supporters often turn on the player they expect to deliver trophies,” Balague explains, “and also on the one they feel is least connected to the club’s identity.”

He points to Vinicius’ on-pitch reactions, public disagreements with former coach Xabi Alonso, and moments perceived as disrespectful, including behaviour during a cup defeat, as factors that have fed mistrust.

Social media actions, such as changing his profile image to one featuring Brazil following whistles at the Bernabeu, and speaking openly about racial respect, have also been interpreted by some fans as confrontational rather than conciliatory.

“Vinicius provokes, and he is seen as arrogant,” Balague says. “Others might receive a more neutral reading for similar behaviour. That suspicion is draining, and the Bernabeu has little tolerance for volatility.”

The racial dimension

Underlying the scrutiny is a more troubling possibility. Vinicius has been the target of repeated racist abuse during his time in Spain, incidents that have led to multiple convictions and suspended prison sentences for perpetrators.

In 2024, after Valencia supporters were jailed for racially abusing him, Vinicius stated: “I’m not a victim of racism, I am a tormentor of racists.”

His outspoken stance has won praise internationally but divided opinion domestically. Balague suggests some fans believe footballers should remain apolitical and silent on social issues, a stance Vinicius has consistently rejected.

“He has lived with discrimination all his life,” Balague says. “He will not accept injustice, even if confronting it makes him more exposed.”

Vinicius’ fifth yellow card of the league season on Sunday will rule him out of next weekend’s trip to Valencia, a fixture already loaded with tension. Claims circulating online that the booking was deliberate were dismissed by those close to the player.

Contract uncertainty adds pressure

Questions surrounding Vinicius’ future have also contributed to unrest. Despite Real Madrid preparing a contract extension ahead of last summer’s Club World Cup, the winger has yet to sign.

At a club where loyalty is closely scrutinised, hesitation can be interpreted as wavering commitment, regardless of context.

Vinicius is understood to have paused negotiations due to dissatisfaction during Alonso’s tenure, though current coach Alvaro Arbeloa has publicly reiterated his desire for the Brazilian to remain.

Balague believes renewal remains likely but acknowledges the atmosphere could influence the player’s thinking.

“Madrid would extend his deal tomorrow if they could,” he says. “But if the crowd continues to turn on him, you have to wonder, why stay somewhere you don’t feel fully wanted, even when you are among the best?”

For now, Vinicius continues to respond the only way he knows how: with performances, passion and visible attachment to the badge, even if that bond remains fragile.
