Nottingham Forest take control in europe as Vitor Pereira era begins with emphatic away win

Vitor Pereira made an immediate impact as Nottingham Forest head coach, guiding his side to a commanding away victory over Fenerbahce in the first leg of their Europa League knockout round play-off, Sport360NG reports.

The Portuguese tactician urged his players to “express themselves” before kick-off, and they responded with a performance of authority and attacking intent that delivered the club’s biggest-ever away win in European competition.

First-half strikes from Murillo and Igor Jesus, followed by a composed finish from captain Morgan Gibbs-White, secured a dominant result that could have been even more convincing given the number of chances created.

Speaking after the match, Pereira praised his side’s application but stressed the job is only half done.

“We had chances to score two more goals. It was a very good result,” he said. “But it is only half-time. We need to be consistent because the schedule is tight and difficult. Everyone must be ready to help the team, that is what I ask of them.”

Pereira, appointed amid a challenging domestic campaign, said he quickly recognised the squad’s potential.

“I realised before I came that the players have a lot of quality. They need results, but they also need to enjoy the game. If they enjoy the way they are playing, they can perform at a high level. They need organisation and confidence. I asked them to express themselves on the pitch, and they did it.”

Forest, currently hovering just above the Premier League relegation zone, view top-flight survival as their primary objective. However, a sustained European run would provide a significant morale boost for a club steeped in continental history, having famously lifted the European Cup twice under the late Brian Clough.

With the return leg scheduled at the City Ground on 26 February, Forest are now well positioned to advance to the round of 16, where either FC Midtjylland or Real Betis await.

Gibbs-White: ‘We Have a Real Identity’

The victory also offered a glimpse of clarity after a turbulent season that has seen multiple managerial changes and contrasting tactical approaches.

Gibbs-White believes Pereira’s arrival has already brought cohesion and direction.

“I felt we had a real identity out there,” the England midfielder said. “We defended well and created so many chances. His message is that we will have a clear identity in how we play and defend as a team. Everyone has bought into it straight away.”

He added that the win and clean sheet arrived at a crucial moment.

“We’ve been through a difficult period and confidence is key. Tonight will help massively. Now it’s about sticking together and becoming the most complete team we can be.”

With momentum on their side and a healthy advantage to defend, Forest’s European ambitions are very much alive, and Pereira’s tenure has begun in the most promising fashion possible.
